This is the Donald Schultz that has given us such serial animal killing shows as I am alive and I was bitten. Both AP shows that did more to scare the general public then educate.
Stick with the facts and come up with solutions to solve the problems. It is a bad idea to blame the problem on storms. We can not control the weather so lawmakers could look at this an say no animals period because they may escape in the next storm. At least with permits to control keepers you can show some type of (attempt) at controlling escapes. Also remember it is not just establishing populations that is a issue . Disease control is a problem with releases or escapes and can wipe out native animals.

This has always been a Florida issue and NOT a national issue. Built into the regulatory permitting required here now in Florida is a disaster management plan that each permittee HAS to include in order to receive ANY permit on herps or animals for that matter. Additionally there are routine inspections of caging and facilties which have minimum requirements in and unto themselves. We are very regulated here and our Industry meets routinely with Florida Fish and Game to improve regs. already in place or to make new regs. There is A TAG meeting today in fact on this very subject. Storms are a natural occurrance and affect Zoo's as well as the Herp Industry at large. The validity of banning anything because of storms is, well, not valid...LOL

I don't believe a ban is valid . But just adding that time should be spent on solving the problem not blaming storms or other things out of our control .They(API) may see this as something we can not control and try to use it.

I'm in total agreement and here we're trying really hard to do just that...I just wanted the public at large to know this disaster plan is required in order to receive permits...

Hey Tom;

Can you post the language of a usable disaster preparedness plan?
We have a new law here requires it for all pet stores. Would be nice to see one that works in another state. We could customize it to fit our own needs and let it fly!

TIA

We did a diagram of the entire farm depicting enclosures and what's in them. There is a protocal for a venomous bite on every place venomous herps are kept that includes maps to general hospital, pertinant phone #, etc. Additionally boxes have been built that are extremely secure that herps would be placed in after placed in bags etc. We include a step by step evacuation plan that includes all potentially dangerous herps in the event I'm not here to facilitate the move....thanks
