URGENT - some pretty bad wounds.

justinmorse Jan 06, 2010 09:24 PM

I apparently have an albino BP with Houdini's abilities.

He got out tonight, and my cats got a hold of him. The last 1/3rd of his body has some pretty bad wounds, some where the skin is completely gone.

Is there a home remedy for this, like antibiotic ointment or anything of the sort, or should he be taken to the vet? I immediately switched him to a clean cage with paper towel to prevent infection, but I would like some advice on where to go from here.

I have had the occassional wounds that have healed very well on regular Neosporin. If the wounds are bad you should seek the assistance of a vet.

Use a tripple anti-biotic. Also if you have some Virosan, do a 50/50 mix and use that to clean the area before you apply the Tripple Anti-biotic. Do that three times a day before you can get the snake to a vet.

Good Luck,
Bill

dont use neo with pain relief, it will cause the snake to get sluggish an not want to move much. use just standard triple antibiotic or neosporin

Cat bites often cause pretty bad infections. If it's anything but a minor wound, the snake should be taken to a vet, as it may require more care than you can provide at home. I have used neosporin on snakes with wounds, but they were always minor wounds.

take to a vet cause deep wounds that are more than 3/16 to 1/4 inch deep are bad my wife is a vet if not cleaned inside internal infection will start and being that a cat did it there deep.

I have and do treat 99% at home but a cat bite!!!!! Hell no take him to the vet. I work with dog and cat groomers and have seen just how quick a small cat puncture wound gets infected and blows up their hand, arm whatever. And cat nail scratches are just as nasty due to all the digging in the litter box, we can let them go home and self treat a dog, guinea pig, bird, hamster whatever but if its a cat bite its a guaranteed/required urgent care trip and its usually red swolen and hot by the time we get there........there is always an antiboitic administered...

Just my knowledge about cat bites......

I definitely agree here, take the snake to the vet asap. From now till the time you are at the vet, you can certainly try to flush out the wounds with clean water and use a topical antibiotic..but deep wounds are hard to clean and there could be damage inside that isn't apparent to the naked eye, like internal bleeding from a nicked vein, bruising, etc. Not to mention small cuts can get infected too, and may be overlooked initially.

Vets can administer antibiotic injections and prescribe regular injections over a course of time which will help deal with the infections that could still be there, even with a careful cleaning. Cat scratches and bites can be quite dirty, I know just typical playing with a cat scratches I would get were always the slowest to heal compared to a deeper knife wound from a kitchen knife, unless I wash the scratches really well.

Actually, yes. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I took him to the vet, got a chlorahexadine solution to dab on the wounds once a day, and a 12 round of syringes of an antiseptic to administer ever 48 hours. The worst of the wounds was sutured up and I have an appointment to go back now in about a week and a half to check things out. Some of the skin where the suture is may need to be removed because it may be dying. That's up to the vet to decide. As of right now though, he is doing very well, he is active, and even after getting wounded, he still had a healthy defecation. Things are looking good!
