Check the archives, there are some pictures of male and female vents floating around. There is a particularly good one that Collared Guy likes a lot.

...anyone know if HD pulled his vent pics? Anyway, USUALLY the females have a small black spot on either side of the vent slit. The males have a row of slightly enlarged scales a few rows 'behind' and parallel to the vent. (All except the C. dickersonae males I think.)

The presence of a small, darkish dot on either side of the vent in females only applies with selected collared species. Of course, one of these is C. collaris, which is the variety of collared lizard most frequently encountered in the pet trade. Males of many Crotaphytus species do have enlarged postanal scales, with C. dickersonae (as DC suggested) being a notable exception. This, combined with the lack of "ventral dots" in females, makes (non-surgical) sexing of neonate C. dickersonae a near impossibility until they are some 8 weeks of age or so... which can seem like one helluva long time, believe me! LOL.. Pretty much the same applies for C. vestigium, with enlarged postanal scales not always present in males of this species, and ventral dotting found rarely (if at all) in females...
