She finally ate...

ninja_tortoise Sep 19, 2003 10:58 AM

well, my little snow wasn't eating, which was odd. she ate the first night i had her, then shed a few days later, then refused all food since. I've had her about 3 weeks.

well, last night i tried scenting a pinky with a frozen/thawed anole. she wanted none of that. so i cut off the anole tail. she took that without hesitation. then i cut off the anole's foot and stuffed that in the pinky's mouth. that seemed to work, until the foot fell out and she ate just that. finally i cut a small hole in the pinky's head (i won't get too graphic) and jammed a small segment of anole leg in there. well, she took it.

it really is amazing to see how a lizard gets their feeding instincts out. she went nuts when she smelled that lizard.

anywho,
what's the next step to ween her off lizards.

thanks.

Congrats!! I love these success stories. I would not worry about getting her off lizards. Just scent the next few feedings and she will accept unscented in no time.

Next time just try rubbing the lizard on the mouse. A couple of times and you should be able to go right to unscented.

I had something similar happen. I had bought an adult corn, and it was obvious he'd only ever been fed mice. He wouldn't touch rats at all. In order to switch him over, I had to skin a mouse, put the fir on the rat like a wig, and then the snake would take it, even if the mouse-wig fell off! It wasn't 'food' until he caught the smell of mouse, apparently. Well, a few weeks of that, and rat was just as much food as mouse was.

Uh... fir = fur... hehe... had my head in the trees, apparently.
