New here, quick question....

LurchCav Sep 19, 2003 10:58 AM

Hello, just signed up for an account here, found a lot of good information so far. Just a little about me, I have a baby ball python that I have had for about 3 months, I also have a bearded dragon who I have had for about one year. I also have several fish including 3 red breasted pirrahna a blue lobster, and assorted african cichlids

Right now I have a problem with my ball python....

My snake seems to be very defensive and agressive when I intially go to pick it up by using just my bare hands. Now I spoke with a local exotic pet store and the owner told me to throw a rag over the snake then when it goes into a ball you pick it up, place it into your hand/arm etc. and begin to "pet" it until it uncoils. I have used this technique for about 2 months now in hopes that my snake gets used to me. Though, when it uncoils and I use more than one hand to pet it, he will strike at my other hand. I generally hold it at least 2 times per day. Any suggestions?

I would obviously not want to have to give the snake away or put it down, but I want to be able to pick it up by hand, as it will soon be too big for a rag.

Seems to me your snake is very stressed!!! You take him out way to much!
I don't like the idea of letting the ball coil up. They coil up when they are scared. And it's a bad idea to scare the snake before picking him up.
First of all, give him some peace. Leave him alone, they are no pets and don't want to be petted 2 times a day. If you take him out (maybe 2 or 3 times a week, except when fed and during shed) don't hold him. Just let him roam around. Don't give him the feeling you're doing things that he doesn't like. And don't overdue it. A few minutes is more than enough! Always move slowly and do not scare him! And be very patient!
