would the python ban

vcane Jan 08, 2010 11:50 PM

make captive breed animals worth more expesialy normals since there would be no or little importing..sure am sick of getting 10 bucks for a healthy feeding baby ball. there are way to many of these being imported we should be able to get 50-100 each for hatchling normal balls but when they can get imports for 8 bucks it just kills the small guy that breeds 10 or less snakes every year. Just not sure some of the issues arn't a good thing. Don't get me wrong i have wrote my letters and made my share of calls against the bills but was woundering what it will do to the cb market in local areas.

If a "ban" passes, anything named would be exactly that, BANNED! It isn't just banning the import, it's banning anything named. Period. It would make anything named worthless and crash that part of the industry. That would just be the beginning! If anything passes it will start a avalanche of more legislation for more animals! In my opinion focus should be on fighting this, any political way we can! I wouldn't spend a second focusing on how much I can get for a normal CBB baby ball, because that normal CBB baby ball is going to be one of the next named on a list at legislation! All baby constictors will be worth nothing in coming days if the legislature starts bans!

We have strength in numbers if we all pull together and fight!

I sent 20 letters to Tom Wolfe yesterday! I got all my family and coworkers I could to sign letters! We beat HR669 last time with 50,000 letters sent to DC. HR669 stopped at the subcommittee because of those letters! We need even more letters for S373! S373 has passed the subcommittee and is moving forward! Letters stopped HR669 so hopefully enough letters are generated to stop S373!

Tom Wolfe NEEDS MORE LETTERS! PLEASE SEND THEM!

This is instructions from USARK as how to make the most effective impact:

We need an ALL OUT effort right now. It is very simple. Writing your letters like we did when we killed HR669 is the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do right now. Follow the instructions below:

1. Letters to your Senators- Go to www.Kill-S373.com and follow the instructions. Use the ‘Sample Letter’. Watch the instructional video. There is no substitute for REAL letters. Do it NOW!!!

2. Email your Senators- This is NOT a substitute for REAL letters. Cut and paste this link in to your browser window. We have made it easy for you. http://www.rallycongress.com/united-states-association-of-reptile-keepers/2705/tell-us-senate-to-stop-python-ban/

3. Contact the Media- ‘Pythons, Politics & Death of the American Dream’ campaign. Cut and paste the links below in to your browser window:
     • MSNBC- http://www.rallycongress.com/united-states-association-of-reptile-keepers/2766/msnbc-pythons-politics-death-american-dream/
     • CNN-  http://www.rallycongress.com/united-states-association-of-reptile-keepers/2765/cnn-pythons-politics-death-american-dream/
     • FOX News- http://www.rallycongress.com/united-states-association-of-reptile-keepers/2726/pythons-politics-death-american-dream/

The future of the Reptile Nation could be decided by what you as an individual are prepared to do over the next few days. Do not miss this opportunity to make a difference! Our community needs to pull together as never before. Do NOT let this be the final days of the Reptile Industry and Hobby!

The value would drop because the market would drop. You would go from being able to sell anywhere to being able to sell in your state. For me, while my snakes of choice isnt listed, I do not know of many blood python breeders period, let alone in WI. Should bloods get added, I would no longer be able to add to my collection. And since my collection is males (I keep to keep) my collection would end there. Off the top of my head I can think of several ball breeders here in WI. They can only sell to so many folks in WI and then the market dries up.

The discussion at this point is moot because balls and bloods are currently not on the bill. HOWEVER the bill is still able to be amended. Right now it just has 9 species of which 5 are very popular in the pet trade. But as you said this will set a precedent for future actions against not only the reptile community but the exotics community as a whole.

Another issue is while I have a pair of wonderful vets here in WI, they may not be able to treat everything. I have a third "back up" vet that is amazing in IL. I will no longer have the ability to use this vet if this bill passes.

The nine species that are currently being affected in our community are
Burmese Python
African Rock Python (both northern and southern species)
Boa Constrictor (this means as written any snake with Latin name boa constrictor XXX)
Reticulated python
Yellow Anaconda
Deschauensee’s anaconda
Green anaconda
Beni anaconda

But remember this bill can still be amended. It CAN still hurt us. They CAN still turn it back to all species in the python genera. Which oddly enough excluded retics.
