Ruthveni.....

Jlassiter Jan 09, 2010 10:28 PM

Here's a cool male I have over here from Shannon for a breeding project that will commence next year.....His mate is a tad small for breeding this year.......

IMO, Ruthveni are way under appreciated.....Theoretically these are the southern most kingsnake......and a mountain kingsnake at that......Some even believe they are the ancestoral grandparent to all kingsnakes on the North American continent, but I don't know about all that.....I just know that they are awesome and I like them.....

Great pics of a gorgeous animal. His head is really cool looking, and I see that tangerine color on the tail.

That's why I like to take pics.....
In the pics they are completely still and I can see everything.....LOL

I paired up mine last season as well.
Here's an albino female.

and her mate, a normal looking het/albino male

...an albino male I pair with a normal female

You know, I had a normal looking female het/albino I bred to the normal het male above for 5 yrs. and never got one albino hatchling.....until....the last snake to pip from a clutch of 6 a few years ago. I had no idea they were hets!
Now I breed them each to albinos and get 50:50 het to albino ratio.

While we're at it....
I still put a het X albino pair together rather than albino X albino. I have been doing this for years since I got duds a few times when pairing them that way. I get 100% hatch rate nowadays.
What's your (and anyone else's) take on that???

Those are all killer Mark....
And het x albino or het X het is the way to go....
Back in 2000 I got het female and an albino male just because of the fertility problems with amel x amel.....
I couldn't get the het female back then to lay viable eggs so I guess it was either my fault or the male's fault.....

I do have another female Ruthveni I got with this amel pair she may be het amel, but I dunno......
We'll see though......

Great pics man!,......

I also think it is usually better to breed a homozygous to a het, not only regarding ruthveni, but some other morphs too. That litle bit of diverse genetics from the het contributor can often make a substantial difference regarding fertility.

Back in the 80s I surfed all over the place and have worked recently in Wilmington, El Segundo and Long Beach so I am well aware that those terms are still "in use" in southern cal.....
Us folks on the Texas Gulf coast "barrowed" those terms from Southern Cal in the 80s but I haven't heard them in many years....

Thanks for the kind words Scott......

I never got to surf west Coast but I surfed the entire Texas Gulf coast that was worth surfing, Mazatlan and the east coast of Florida........

I was in Southern Cal (Redondo Beach) in 2007 but by then it was WAY too long since I had been on a board that I didn't even attempt catching any waves there....You know...I'm too old, fat and gray now......LOL
