Height for Rainbow Boa Cage...

montypython_42 Jan 10, 2010 02:16 PM

Hallo everyone!

So in a few weeks I'm going to build my new snake cage, finally! Just to recap the cage is going to be divided up into several sections so it can house several snakes, with one section on top of the other like a bookcase. The floor space for each of them will be 4x2. I was initially planning on making each section 12 inches tall since many of these sections will house ball pythons. Is 12 inches okay for Brazilian Rainbow Boa's? I know many consider them to be a semi-aboreal snake so I was thinking of making some of the sections 18 inches. But I have never noticed any of my Brazilians climbing before even when they have the opportunity...

18" isn't going to provide much opportunity for climbing either way. For a snake that can reach up to 7' long, a little over a foot off the ground isn't really climbing for it.

However, I don't think adults climb much compared to younger snakes. The cages I have for my BRB's had a climbing bar and when my first BRB I bought as a baby was in it, I would often find her coiled around the wooden bar. As an adult, the bar wasn't really high or thick enough to for it to do more than treat it as an obstacle to drape over as it moved about the cage.

For a rack system, I really don't think its needed to make cages extra high for climbing...and BRB's do fine in typical rack systems. If you wanted to go for a more naturalistic setup, then definitely I would suggest give lots of height and climbing branches etc. though I would recommend a height of 36" for that sort of setup. Even then not sure the adult would use the height and climbing surfaces as more arboreal snakes would.

I guess you're right, an extra six inches won't really matter. I have climbing branches in with my baby BRB and she has never shown any interest.

It probably depends on your snake, but I notice that my 2 year old male is often climbing around when I turn the lights out in my room. He climbs as high as he can, and seems quite active on the branches.

one thing to remember too is that they are nocturnal so they are most active when your sleeping so your around to see how much of the cage they do use

I currently only have two adults and use to have one previous adult and all seem fine in 12 high cages and im sure they would be fine in even less. However when I had my female in a 3x2x18 cage with two pvc perches she did seem to use them ALOT.
