Grey Rats not popular?

Avalanche Jan 10, 2010 03:18 PM

I notice a complete lack of any Grey Rat talk here in the forum. I always loved black and grey rat snakes growing up. I was thinking of picking a couple up and I cant find any anywhere. Anyone know of a breeder?

I do see less of them being kept then some of the other North American ratsnakes. I'd keep a check classifieds. You'll seem them pop up from time to time. I purchased a male from Dwight Good out of Kentucky, but it's been a while since I've talked with Dwight, so I'm not up to date with his email.

...someone posted a nice Gray Rat....that's a beauty!

I agree, that IS a very nice one that Steve posted!, and they certainly are an underrated ratsnake in today's hobby. I recall seing many more of them being available years back.

Yep, had a beaut just like that when I was around 12 years old. Would like another one and got a young one from a Florida breeder but it wasn't right and carced-out on me after one meal. They are so tiny and frail as neonates. If anyone knows of a well started youngster let me know.

A guy named Jim Kavney of (Hiss-N-Things) used to breed REALLY nice light-colored "White Oak" phase gray rats, but his wife passed away several years ago, and he got out of the business altogether. He was out of Islamorada in the Florida keys, and I used to see him all the time at a local herp show in Ft. Lauderdale years ago. Too bad his wife passed away and he no longer has his reptile business going.

Hi Doug,

I agree 100%. Grey Rats, black rats, and even yellow rats were very popular a long time ago, I'm probably going back 25 years. You don't see them anymore.

I used to love those high strung yellows!!!

There are still several breeders with grays. Sunshine Serpents come to mind (a KS advertiser).
.
It seems the natural morphs phase in and out over the years at deli cup shows, with aberrant morphs overshadowing, so it becomes an issue of supply and demand.

Wow! Never seen one quite like that...what a looker!

I'm aware of Sunshine...didn't have my luck with my neonates from there although. Not quite sure what the issue was but I treated them right.

That's unfortunate with the hatchlings.
Daniel usuall has some nice stuff.
I'm suprised they didn't fair well.
.
Sometimes I wonder how many times hatchlings get X-rayed when shipped, when you hear of healthy animals crashing after shipping???
