Anyone buy from Big Apple Herp?

avalanche Jan 11, 2010 12:10 PM

I have been thinking about picking up a few new milk snakes and was wondering if anyone here has ordered from Big Apple Herp? In particular ID like to know about the quality of the animals and the responsiveness of the company.

I know nothing about this particular company, except what I have noticed by folowing the classifieds for the last several weeks.

They seem to be bunchers -- they seem to buy wholesale lots for resale. And that means a few things are probably true:

1. They probably don't breed their own animals
2. The animals are probably stressed by being shipped multiple times (at least twice)
3. The animals are likely to be exposed to more disease problems, since they will be around animals from many other sources
4. The sellers probably do not have as much direct personal knowledge of the animals they're selling as a private breeder would
5. Since they are a middle man, you are likely to pay higher prices than you would by buying directly from the breeder.

Do you see where I'm going here?

btw -- if I am incorrect in any of my ideas about this company, I would be happy to be corrected!

The guy who runs it is Steve Spitz along with his wife, Karen. I've known the guy for almost 20 years and he's not a bad guy at all. He's made his mistakes, but has been doing this business he runs for as long as I've been breeding (17 years). I believe he actually DOES breed some of his own stuff, but very few. He approaches select people that he has known (including myself) to buy in quantity and does charge a relatively higher price, but not insanely high.

Bottom line it's his livelihood, not like me or some other fellas that do it on the side for fun and to pay for the food and time invested. So he's likely not to haggle as you could with a private breeder. But one thing is for sure is that he doesnt buy just any old garbage. Try reaching out a talking with him if he has something you MUST have. If not, go with a private breeder that is reputable.

Over 1,000 snakes and lizards, that's alot. Too much for me, seems to be more of a broker. I would feel more at ease dealing with Applegate reptiles, High Sierra and Ric Blair reptiles. You get what you pay for so why not get the best?
