I was in your neck of the woods this time last year, and i fondly remember the 75 degree days while it was single digits back here. I never thought I'd see a photo like that come out of Homestead.

Maybe read up a bit on global warming... My understanding is harsher winters are expected. I guess this was just a lucky guess?

They made that prediction after the fact when they realized that their original prediction was not coming to fruition. It was originally assumed that the annual climate in general would become hotter. Then when it became apparent that this was not happening, they decided to say that 'clearly global warming is actually going to cause global cooling'... which goes down in history as one of the dumbest arguments of all time. It's basically a way of saying 'well, we were wrong, however we are scientists and would not like to admit that'.

Believe what you wish about global warming. I surely do not wish to derail the thread further, but you have to realize that the people that write about global warming have something to gain. Al Gore had a lot to gain, as did everyone else who has signed on to the global warming agenda. I wish someone would explain how they can claim that we have had a warming trend over the past century, causing them to believe that global warming is going to be a problem, while in the 70's they were predicting the coming of another ice age.

Plus, 'global warming' in the natural sense (the Earth naturally becomes slightly warmer and slightly cooler throughout centuries of orbit, that is the nature of an elliptical orbit, which over time pushes the planet to opposite ends of the goldilocks zone) has been happening ever since the last ice age. Let's think about it this way... This past century the temperature has risen a few degrees on average. Also in this past century mankind in general has witnessed the greatest period of advancement in history (including important advancements like medical care... not just cars and chemicals, which we all agree can cause environmental problems, however the problems are more direct and people never think about that).

Just some things to think about. People for global warming always claim that the reason one would be skeptical of the theory is only because he/she has not done enough research. I have done enough research to discover that, yes, we are harmful to our planet and ourselves. That is human nature and it is what will eventually lead to the demise of the human race (if not most other species of animals and plants as well). Global warming is not what I am concerned about. It is a small problem in a list of huge problems. Over population is the number one problem on my list. We need to stop having babies! Try to get people to sign on to that and see how difficult it is to find people with an altruistic desire to help their planet.

And those people saying global warming is a myth ALSO have a lot to gain....or does it only work one way in your world?

furcharlie Jan 14, 2010 09:45 PM

As a scientist, I do believe climate change is much better verbage. U should realize Ryan, that the eight of the last ten years have still been the hotest on record for the planet as a whole.

Considering that picture is in Florida...it is surprising and worrying for all the native wildlife who never had to experience such cold weather for so long.

Being from much further north, where freezing rain, ice storms, snow storms, frigid wind chills are all the norm especially this time of the year... icy formations like the picture are nothing. But I can definitely understand how freakish the weather is for you guys down in Florida.

Only time will tell how this cold snap will affect the overall populations of reptiles, both invasive and native, not to mention all the other animals who make their home in Florida.
