superworms

Is it OK to make superworms a staple diet for a leo that's big enough to eat them?

I would think it would be ok aslong as they are well gutloaded. My leos love them. I would leave a bowl of mealies in though too, in case they do get hungry when you aint around. I leave those in instead of supers, cuz supers make a mess, they will digg into the papertowels or whatever substrate that you have.

Try it and see how your leo handles it. Nutritionally, supers are about the same as mealies but with a higher meat to shell content. You just have to make sure your leo will take them. Watch closely to make sure your leo doesn't have to yawn and stretch and squirm too much just to get the supers all the way down. If that's the case, you could try giving her fewer supers and more mealies or crickets. That's what I do anyway.

I ask because I've started giving them to my larger girl & she loves them, but she's not pooping everyday now. When she does, it looks normal, but she has always pooped once a day. She lives on papertowels, so no sand impaction possibility. Her belly looks & feels normal. I was wondering if the thicker skin on the supers could cause constipation or impaction or anything.

OK, right after I finished typing that last post, she pooped on my shoulder! LOL! It looks really normal & good (for poop that is). I'm betting it's just the higher meat/shell ratio that Xelda mentioned. Thanks everyone.

It would help her out if you fed her the freshly molted superworms or even just the lightest-colored ones in your batch.
