where to put temp probe? under hide???

yankeeslover Jan 12, 2010 10:13 AM

just wondering where is the best place to set my digital probe? Im using an old plastic coffee can for hides on each side of tank.. I use a uth. if i set the probe inside the hide on the warm end it reads 88 degrees, if i set it next to the hide, but still on the warm end it reads 85.. obviously its warmer inside the hide because the heat has nowhere to go, but if I lower the heat to where its around 85 in hide, then the rest of the tank really drops.. just wondering where most people check there temps? and if they put vent holes in the hide on the warm end so heat does not build up too high inside the hide..thanks much..

88 degrees is fine for a hot spot. The snake will access a range of temperatures to find the temperature that best suits its needs at any particular time.

I like to use the plastic storage boxes sold at many chain stores. They're cheap and their low profile makes the snake feel more secure (IMHO). Since it has an elongated shape, the back part can be put over my heat cable, while the front part is unheated. This way the snake can move around within the box to get to the temperature it prefers.
