I like this one until the reporter at the end. While Larry is what may seem as a stereotypical keeper with his long hair, the girl with the ball pythons definitely looks something along the lines of mainstream normal. As well as having a vet speak. Nice job at least until the reporter showed her feelings for the snakes.

LOL Perhaps I may have "seen" it because I knew it was there.

Trust me, Unless I am at a reptile community type of event, my tattoos are almost ALWAYS covered! Except the neck one, but the ponytail usually hides that.

I've been working on a brochure for my educational reptile presentation business, which is designed primarily for elementary school students in Texas. I showed it to a number of teachers and faculty at the school I currently present to. Everyone loved the information and design of the brochure and I received only one suggestion, which came from several people: they asked that I include a picture of myself so that the decision makers and other teachers could see that I am clean cut and professional. They said that other animal presenters were sometimes scary (long hair, tattoos, wild beards, etc.), and they would feel more comfortable about the snakes if the presenter looked like a "normal person." (Their words, not mine)

If you go to the bigger reptile shows, you will notice more tattoos (and cleavage) on the attendees than the regular population. It's like biker shows. Many are "normal" looking, but some tend to give off a "different" look.

What I like is the common interest that draws people of such divergent and different backgrounds together. Haven't noticed any fear or intimidation. More of a mutual understanding, the unspoken acknowledgment of a common interest in a subject requiring a certain amount of intelligence, curiosity, and thought in order to appreciate.

I'd like to second JSC's comment about the differences of reptile keepers. We should make an effort to be clean and presentable when we speak in public, but we should also highlight the diversity in our hobby. While many people try to portray us as full of tattoos and piercings with unruly looks, we span the whole range. Many reptile keepers are members of the military. Many are white-collar professionals. We come from about every background one can imagine.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Mike it is DEF something right now we all should consider. As I work in an office as a part time, I do need to have a certain ability to basically cover everything! I have made it a further point to clean up a little more with this legislation moving forward as I do public presentation. Of course, working in rescue, it has always been a pet peeve of mine that many rescue workers will not make themselves presentable. So I always have taken that extra step.

What drives me nuts is people walking around in public with their snakes around their neck. Many times, in 60 degree weather. They're clueless. Many snake shows don't allow it.

jscrick Jan 16, 2010 05:30 PM

Obviously some are in it for the shock value, or the machismo, but are truly a minority.
Many are just new to the hobby and not that informed. We all have to start somewhere.
Some people are just inconsiderate in all they do.

Larry is a long time (30 years) friend of mine. He told me they were going to do this

Jaykis Jan 13, 2010 04:33 PM

And thanks for the link, Randy. Larry didn't have it.

Well make sure to tell him very good job. He came across very nicely and I really like the stay at home dad aspect. This is something we are looking at garnering support with Tracy Barker. Check out the Calling All Girls err Women link...
