Suspension Incubation Method????

hondorock Jan 13, 2010 12:42 AM

I was out and came a across a eastern milk snake one day, so i decided kept it for a few days, I was waiting for a nice day to tk a pics of it. Then when i went to tk her out she was coil up in her box with 9 eggs! she was little eastern too only about 28 inches!! Also another day my brother called me (his a youngster)and said a huge rainstorm hit and so he was out looking for salamanders on the side of the road and he came across 4 eggs that were being drown so i came over took them and hatched them and they ended up being smooth green snakes! a rare snake around my area, i live in PA. Anyways, I hatched the clutches using a heating pad and closed plastic shoe box using gravel and water on bottom and moss on top of the gravel. It worked great by the way every baby hatched out perfect! But this caught my eye the other day I seen some use the Suspension Incubation Method. They say it works better and they eggs hatch faster. Is this true? because I'm going to breed some hondos for the first time this year and was wondering if this would be a good idea?

What is the suspension method? Is it where the eggs are on a plastic grate above the moist substrate below?

I have been told that snakes eggs are often found in places where the ground is not wet or damp but the localized humidity surrounding the eggs is above moderate. If that is true, then the suspension method sounds like a good way to mimic those conditions.

Not sure if you hatched both clutches the same way. The green snake is pretty unique, the eggs have only a 2 week incubation period not a 2 month cycle like most eggs. Keep it SIMPLE, no heat pads needed for local colubrids. I think you should look at the archaives here and see what other successful breeders use. There is no shame in copying a working method.

I have been using the suspension method for a few years and it does work very well and my hatch rate is nearly 100% since then.
