some may escape the florida cold

i95east Jan 13, 2010 02:00 AM

saw a very unusual sight today. as tom crutchfield has documented, south florida has been super cold all week. i went to a small pond by my farm that after a typical two day cold snap last year was full of dead iguanas that had fallen out of the trees into the water and drowned, unable to function in the cold. i expected to see the same thing. instead, in clear, ten inch deep water were iguanas buried in the mud like softshell turtles, with only their head and shoulders exposed. i thought maybe they were dead, but one finally turned it's head up to look at me. never did see one stick it's head up to breath in the ten minutes i watched them. i'm being careful not to draw any conclusions. kurt d.

Any way you could get photos of that? I've never heard of iguanas doing that before, it would be interesting to see.

At a herp society slide show, an animal tracker showed photos of alligators in a frozen ditch with only their nostrils out of the ice. There were several gators in the photo.
