egg question ( probably just paranoid )

edenspets Jan 14, 2010 12:27 PM

my girl laid eggs 10 days ago. they have been in the incubator since then. i went the zero substrate method for the egg boxes ( water and light defuser )and temp is at 89.6 with 99% humidity. when i checked them today i noticed a bit of denting on the eggs. ( only 10 days old ) and of course this being my first clutch i am overly paranoid, and will probably remain so until i take a clutch full term and hatch them. any opinions?

Check out the Tools and Toys link below the message box when you are trying to put an image in, it will give you the code if you are trying to link to the picture(s).

OR, if you want, you could upload your pictures to the Kingsnake website and then you can just select which ones to insert into your post.

That's a perfectly common and normal thing. As long as your humidity stays right...no worries.

And seeing that pic just totally kicked in my craving for getting this year's eggs.

Dented eggs prior to day 40 or so is a good indication that your humidity is too low. I know your hygrometer reads 99% but I would add a second unit just to be sure. Healthy eggs will remain "plump" throughout incubation if enough humidity is provided.

One suggestion...next time, use sopping wet perlite instead of just plain water under the grate. The perlite greatly increases surface area, and therefore evaporation. I'm guessing that you're not quite as high humidity wise as your guage reads. How is the box ventilated? You can close up pretty much all ventilation at this point....
