Moving ball python into larger cage...

montypython_42 Jan 15, 2010 03:23 PM

So I'll have my new cage system set up by early February, complete with Pro-Products RHP's! I'm very excited : ) What I'm not sure on is when I should move my snakes into the cage. I'm going to run it for a few days without them in it to make sure everything is okay, just in case. My Ball Python was hatched in August 2009, other than her recent refusal to eat for 3 weeks she's been a great feeder and has been growing fast. She's in a ten gallon right now and is out exploring her cage every night. Her new home has a floor space of 4x2 which is quite a bit bigger than what she has now. Should I hold off on putting her into the larger cage size for a while? And if so, how long? I'm debating the same thing with my BRB who is a July 2009 edition. I won't be getting rid of my ten gallons so I could always move them back if I felt they weren't adjusting...

Here are some pics of my girl. Our scale is still packed from our recent move so I'm not sure how much she eats at the moment but she's about 20inches long. Right now she's eating one f/t adult mouse every 6 days. I'm hoping to switch her over to f/t small rats soon but I think they're still a little to big for her...

And my BRB just because : )

You are moving your ball python to a 4x2 cage ?

No problem with that, but I would put many hides in there, cause she will feel crazy. It's like 10 times more than what she had in her 10 gallon.

May be you could put the 10 gallon inside the other one for while.

Or using that big enclosure for the brb would be more suited I think.

They're actually both getting moved into the new cage once it's finished. The cage has six sections that are each 4x2x1. Both snakes are roughly the same age and size. The Ball Python is 20inches and obviously bigger bodied; the BRB is 22inches. They're both handled regularly. I'm going to put several hides in each cage. I think I'll give it a try next month and if they don't adjust I can just move them back. My Ball Python is just starting to look a little ridiculous in a ten gallon tank as she tries to find an escape : )

I know that feeling all to well.
