Just got my froggies.

Mothi Sep 19, 2003 02:21 PM

I just recieved my 20 Rice Paddy Frogs (Occidozyga Lima). Here is one picture I have taken so far.

Their cage still needs a little adjustments. But the little froggies are doing well so far. They have even made some sounds. One is really huge also. Some of the smaller ones I am going to set up into a seperate tank from the others so they have a better chance at growing up nicely. I will take more pictures of the set up when I am done.

WHAT?!?! yours are already calling? Ugh....Mine have never called in 5 months. I'm going to try raising the tempature.

Here are pictures of their tank. It is a 20-gallon long half full of water. I used a black background around 3 sides for maximum privacy but allows me to still view them.

Here is the picture of the filter I am using. Zoomed 501 canister filter (brand new item I bought at Petsmart for $40).

And here are my little froggies.

Hope you enjoyed them.

Looking good. What tempature is the water?

ive never seen these before, look much larger than my adf's lol
are they totally aquatic ?

I have the day time high temperature in the tank at 80. At night the temperatures drop into low 70s. (I guess my 25 watt heater is too low. I will probably buy a 100 watt for them later to keep temperature up better.) I gave them 4 baby roaches (since I don't get my crickets until Tuesday/Wednesday) and they ate them up. I still hear the occasional croak, but it is very low...like a really really tiny dog barking (imagine a chihuahua the size of the froggies). Could be easily missed if there are lots of other sounds around.

What I noticed is that they can stay underwater for a good amount of time. This scared me in the beginning thinking they are drowning, but they know when to go back to the surface. They float easily on the surface and can even swim well underwater in quick dashes. When I had them before, I had water that was not deep so I never saw them swimming underwater or sitting underwater before. I made the water area deeper this time in hopes I can add some fishes...but then maybe I won't...

They are not complete aquatics like ADFs and will occasionally use land areas. They also eat insects.

did you buy these off a website? if so, a link would be highly appreciated. also, how well do you think these guys would do in a pond? i remember seeing them in a pet store a really long time ago, but havent seen any since. my pond is raised off the ground and no fish, about 6 hours of sun everyday. thanks.

I bought them from http://aquariumstuffers.com/

I don't know if they would do good in a pond since weather is an issue. They seem to like warmer waters at 80F. At night their cage dips into the mid 70s with no ill effect. Since information about their care is limited, I can't say for sure how they will be. Also keep in mind they are likely to be non-native to your area. I am a firm believer in not releasing anything that doesn't already exist in your area naturally.

yea i believe in the same thing, however my pond is completely enclosed. had too many racoon attacks. i live in so cal, so being warm isnt an issue. at night however, it gets in the 60s. i think im gonna buy a few for a nice aquarium setup, thanks for the link and info.
