Hyper melanistic dragon?

wh1t3_mamba Jan 15, 2010 09:33 PM

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to identify a bearded dragon that I recently adopted.

He has some very dark coloration so I believe him to be hyper melanistic, but I'm having a really hard time finding any pictures of adult hyper melanistic or melanistic dragons anywhere.

Does anyone have any pictures or could point me in the direction of some that could help me identify my guy?

Thanks!

Can you post a picture of your animal? I'd like to see what it looks like.

sorry for taking so long!

He is pretty dark for a typical normal bearded dragon...though I don't think he's dark enough to be considered hyper melanistic but definitely would be a good choice to breed to a similarly dark female to see if the offspring show even darker appearances. Hypermelanistic would be an almost totally black or dark brown animal, seem to remember somebody having a picture of a much darker dragon in the past...

He's not pretty but he is very dark.

That's just a crazy looking dragon BDLVR....belongs in a scary movie !! Just kidding....anyway,I don't think the guys dragon necessarily looks like a female...impossible to tell without checking the plumbing.

Impossible to tell for sure. But females generally look different than males. Head shape, body design etc.

Are you sure he is a he? He looks a lot like a she to me. I have a female rescue that looks very similar.

Asphalt is a he. I made sure to check again just now.
He's got the two bulges after his vent.

i recently was able to create a dark offspring he was very dark grey with very thick black stripes is like 85 percent charcoal black and the rest is normal color do you know if hell losehis color when maturing as some other black reptiles sometimes do i would like to see a pic of yours to compare your link to pic is broken ive been trying to breed a meleanistic for awhile but this is only succeful breeding so far for me of a black morph

wh1t3_mamba Feb 13, 2010 03:32 PM

sorry about that.
here's the picture.

Unfortunately, since I'm actually not sure if he is melanistic or not, I can't give you much information.
But he has retained his dark color. I can't say for sure how old he is, but my guess is that he's around two years old.

how does he compare to your dragon?

this is my male who i hope to prove this yr. and this is only half as dark as he gets!

WOW!

That is one dark dragon.
Definitely much darker than my Asphalt.

Did you breed him?

I still haven't been able to identify Asphalt's color morph. I suppose it might be near impossible without knowing where he came from.

But I'll keep trying.

dragonsbowl Feb 19, 2010 10:07 AM

THIS YEAR WILL BE THE FIRST YR. AND I SAW WHAT LOOKED TO BE A BROTHER OF HIS AT A LOCAL BREEDERS HOUSE BUT HAVE YET TO FIND A FEMALE, LOOKING TO PROVE HIM OUT THIS YEAR AND VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT. THANKS.
