on agama international's site (or maybe it was his REPTILES article) suggests hay as a tegu substrate (as long as you have a moist hide box). does anyone have any experience using timothy hay for tegu substrate? it's easy to get at almost any pet store, and it smells nice. rodents love to eat it, i feed it to my mice and was wondering if anyone knew if it would be an alright substrate for tegus. i've seen tegus under hay before, and they do seem to like it and was wondering if the same would go for timothy hay. ~???~

Speaking for myself I wouldn't bother, soil appears to have much more benefit. Come to think of it, I'm breaking convention and dumping the hide-box idea as well.
Since Tegus burrow, which provides a means for them to retain body moisture and also provides security why not give them the materials to build their own "homes"?

I was under the impression that hay was used as a "top" insulator for soil rather than the primary substrate at Agama International.

Just my thoughts for the evening,

Take Care,

Kit.

I'm really not to sure about the hay. I agree with Berts condition though. Tegus do need humidity but I think it's important to realize that needed humidity comes from the hide box. The reason being that it's by far where the tegu spends most of it's time. If you have a moist hide box where the tegu spends most of it's time then you don't need to worry much about the cage humidity. Besides it would be near impossible for the cage to get to the humidity level in a moist hide box (about 100% I bet).
