3/4 inch or 1/2 inch or both?

calebjg Jan 18, 2010 09:44 AM

If I build using a single sheet of 4x6 as the back and build one 18x6ftx24deep at the bottom with three separate cages above at 30x24x24 each what size wood?
I dont want to use melamine as I cant get it local and its way to heavy.I can get a good grade plywood.I was thinking 1/2 in. for the back and sides and 3/4 for the floors and dividers but have no real idea if that should be reversed for strength. As in back and floor/ceiling 3/4 and sides 1/2.

Or should I just do it all in one or the other? I dont want to make too many cuts so I was making the cages to fit the one back piece of 4x6

So it would have one boa at the bottom and 3 colubrids on top(rat, corn and milk)

For weight purposes alone I would consider building separate stackable cages.

I have build many a cage with 3/4 material with a 1/8" back. Depending on how you plan to construct your front, you could do it all out of 1/2 material.

When using the 1/2 material, be sure to pre-drill screw holes.

Ive already decided to build just the boa enclosure first as I just acquired some new snakes and well this puts a new spin on everything. So I am going to build it out of 3/4 so I can make sure its strong for future cages on top.

Well I'm definetly a little late on this one but if your going with a higher grade plywood then I would just go with 3/4" on everything. You can however use any thickness you want on the back to save a little cash. We use a 3/4" birch double finished plywood on ours and it's light weight, very strong and doesn't bow if attached correctly. Be sure to predrill and countersink the heads either way.

Best of luck,
