PLEASE DO NOT RELEASE HERPS

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Jan 18, 2010 10:03 AM

of any kind for any reason. I sometimes here threats but any release could damage our already fragile ecosystems as well as have a negative effect on all our efforts to achieve positive results. I WOULD LIKE TO GO ON RECORD OPPOSING ANY RELEASES...Also the Anaconda that was caught here in Fl. recently was a tame snake about 12' long. We have reason to think it was an intentional release and I have been asked to try to get info on this snake if possible. Anyone with any info may call me at 239-645-9661

Isn't "Tame Anaconda" an oxymoron? There aren't a lot of anaconda owners, you might be able to track them down.

Michael Cole was in charge of taking pledges for a reward that was offered to find out who released a 12ft tame Burmese in a parking lot Tampa just prior to a vote. They ended up with a reward fund of about 18K.

jsschrei Jan 19, 2010 12:35 PM

Mr. Cole ran a campaign to collect pledges for a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the release of a snake in Florida.

I pledged towards that, and I would for the arrest and conviction of the idiot that released this anaconda.

I can totally understand that some people are so frustrated that they just can't stand it. But releasing more animals will only make the situation worse. The humaniac groups would love to have more ammunition to use against us - we can't afford to give it to them!

Just random thoughts but:

Is there any place that these things can be safely brought or turned over if an owner doesn't want to care for them? I mean aside from the government programs that put a shovel to their neck at the end of the day?

Are there any precautions people selling these things can take to ensure the HSUS or PETA freaks can't be buying and releasing them for publicity? I guess micro-chipping before they go to their new owners but would imagine that can get expensive?

I'm also sure some yahoo(s) will likely release some snakes just to prove the point that if they ban them more of them are going to be released. Theres just no accounting for what people will do to prove their point.

That PETA is putting their hand in this. They are a bunch if terrorists with finacial backing by people uneducated about what their real agenda is. It's really disturbing what thy can get away with because they have some money.

...microchip there large animals before selling them. I remember years ago lots of breeders would microchip the high-end animals but then it became unpopular.

I personally think that if all breeders would take the time and effort to microchip large constrictors before selling them it would do wonders for our hobby. We could then go a step further and have some kind of registry where we would know who owned what animal and if one was released we could hold that person responsible.

Years ago I contacted a microchip company (http://www.avidid.com) and I don't remember it being all that expensive to purchase the needed stuff to microchip animals yourself. I think it was less than $10.00 per chip.

The only place in the U.S. that has a problem with feral pythons is Florida. In Florida a micro chip is required once the animal reaches a circumference of two inches. There is also a $100 annual permit.

superrodent Jan 18, 2010 09:31 PM

I didn't know that.

I live in Wisconsin. I run a rescue that does not ship. We only adopt to folks living in Wisconsin and IL and occasionally MN.

Any large boid gets chipped here. Right now that list is basically burms and boas. We also microchip sulcattas.

The chips are required when a snake reaches a diameter of two inches, not a circumference of two inches.

I agree with your thoughts, but let's lead by example.............
