laser temp guns

johnthebaptist Jan 18, 2010 09:14 PM

i have seen these being used often lately with keepers. they are pretty neat and i went to the hardware store today to pick one up. i didnt leave the store with it because i read a warning label on the side that said 'avoid contact. laser emits radiation'. anyone know what the possible effects on an animal might be using these temp guns?. is it stupid to be worried about them? i live by a 'better safe than sorry' motto'

>>'avoid contact. laser emits radiation'

If you're quoting that correctly, the label is very midleading. They mean "electomagnetic radiation", whuch is very different from what most people mean when they say "radiation". All it means is that it puts out a very bright light. Don't point the laser directly at your snakes' eyes (or your own) and you'll be fine.

buy one and use it freely. Best husbandry tool in a very long time. Maybe not *as* significant as red bulbs and UTH's but up there

I have one too, and as long as they are not shined directly into the animals eyes(or yours), there is zero chance of any harm whatsoever.

Why go to the hardware store? There are many reptile companies that sell temp guns, and they spend plenty of money to promote and educate reptile hobbyists to the value of a temp gun, the single most important husbandry tool.

Temp guns are available here on the classifieds from a number of reptile specific sellers. LLL Reptile, Bean Farm, Mark Bell's new site, and even us at Pro Exotics.

Support those that support you, thanks.

And it isn't like they're pricey at PE or LLL; I paid like 20-25 for my last one I think. I'm debating buying another just for carrying in the field to measure temp surfaces when finding herps.

yes but robyn...temp guns in hardware stores are sometimes much cheaper for something that does the same job ie automotive gun
I'm all for supporting the industry...but I'd rather put the savings back into my wallet for my family and my herps =)
