new rtbs

tjgillaspy Jan 18, 2010 10:17 PM

my wife and i finaly took the plunge and bought some columbians that arrived last friday. up intell then we just had 0.0.2 ball pythons and now have 0.4.0 rtbs. will most likely sell 2 of them around home . not trying to make money but figure we can give someone a great deal sence these guys are going for 200.00 anywhere you go around here . If it werent for this site and the breeders on it we wouldnt have got the chance to own these beauties(thanx agian mathew). one thing that really suprized me(being new to boas) is that we got them out to feed them and they were all very calm but after they ate 2 of them were striking ate me like crazy. they all took their meals with in 10-30 sec which made me very happy, but the 2 striking at me just by walking past them shocked me a bit. just chaulking it up to them being babys and have only been in their new home for 4 days. cant seem to figure out how to post pics. their just commons but im still very proud of them.

Congrats on your new boas. They are wonderful snakes and Colombian boas can be some of the calmest snakes you will find. They are different than ball pythons though. What you experienced is a feeding response and some snakes exhibit that for a good while after eating. I read that you took them out for feeding. If you are keeping them in the same cage you will have to do that. Snakes are best kept in separate cages and fed inside the cage as opposed to being removed for feeding. Less stress on you and the snake and thogh calm/tame you won't want to deal with the feeding response of a large boa as they get bigger. Good luck with them. Bill

yeah , like i say we are very new to this and all my info is from reading and this site. we are turning to the folks on this site for issuse and everyone has been awsome. but the main reason i move them to a feeder tank is because ive read that if you feed in their "home" you run a higher chance of geting bit. they figure out when they are put in to other said tank that they know its time to eat. so any truth to that?
