Making a removable divider?

montypython_42 Jan 19, 2010 12:44 AM

Hallo Everyone!

Has anyone here ever built a cage with a removable center divide? The sections of the cage I'm building will be 6x2 which is great for some of the larger snakes I'll be housing but some of the sections will be housing ball pythons and sub-adult brazilian rainbow boas so I wanted to dived them in half, so each section will be 3x2. What's an easy way to make a divider that I could remove later if I wanted to? I'm 90% sure I'm going to use fold down doors on each section. If I used one door to cover the entire row (so both 3x2 sections) I could just put the divider on a track and slide it out but I would like for each section to have it's own door... Any ideas?

i have a simple removable divider in my 4' x 2' cages i also keep BRBs. i kept it simple and ran a divider stop on the inside of the face and back walls of the cage, then the dividers have a "nailer blocking" same front and back. all i do is snap the divider in place and run 2 screws to hold it, one centered on each nailer.

I have another problem that perhaps you can help me with. I would like to put vents on both sides of the cage but I need some way of covering them. The door itself is going to provide some ventilation and this is probably all I will need in the winter. During the summer though I would like to be able to open the vents if I need to. Any ideas on what I can use to cover the vents when I don't want to use them? I'm going to poke around the hardware store this weekend but thought you might have some ideas...

hmm okay well there are a few ways to do this, let me first ask what does the cage look like whats it made out of and everything

it could be as simple as drill a 3" hole for and cover it wile a louvered vent cap or screen or something on the inside then cut out a block 3" circle attach that to a 5" circle of the same material and you have yourself a 3" hole plug... or it doesnt have to be circle either. you can screw it too so it doesnt just fall out of place, it could be screwed from the inside or out.

thats just the first thing that i thought of im sure there are other ways to do it ill keep thinking of that one

The cage is going to be made of 1/2 plywood, probably oak. I was thinking of using louvered vent cap but I looked around on Lowes and Home Depots website and everything I saw looked like it was too big. Since all my snakes require high humidity I don't want to install too big of a vent. I'm going to actually go into the store this weekend and see what I can find. If you come up with anything else let me know! Thanks!

Those DIY stores sell small round louvered vents, I think 2 inches in diameter. Perfect for your application.

You cut a hole and push the vents in from inside the cage. I think they sell a standard hole saw size for these vents. The vent has a lip that you can put a screw or two through to keep it from falling out.

I wouldn't be too concerned with ventilation with BPs and BRBs. Just opening the cage door periodically is probably enough for those snakes.

Google High End Herps web page.. Go to the So you want to be a breeder section and look at his burm cages. It may be easier for you to do a removeable divider from the outside of the cage.. I just finished my 1st 8' x 3' cage today but I built a stack of 4' x 2' for my boas a few weekends ago..
