a success story of sorts

thomas davis Jan 21, 2010 02:47 PM

a pic of the milk, she is from a dbl.het. breedings is a sibling to a snow and albino.

the SHORT story...
hatched in '06 whole clutch emerged within 24 hrs all perfect except one.

no biggie...

well after 3 days i started prodding and cutting the egg a lil and out the above snake shot like a bullet still with a fairly large yolk sak attached.

no biggie...

i put her on damp paper towels all is good no kinks jst alot of yolk and understandably a tad smaller than siblings. after 3 days most of the yolk was gone but still to delicate to put on bedding so stay on the paper towels next day she sheds gets a bit hung up the umbilicus but a small snip and all is good except she had an abnomally large belly button.

again no biggie...

keep on p.towels until its shut offer f/t pinks she eats all seems great until...
well the bastage lil carrion gnat flies seemed especially bad that year and when i check her a few days later to my HORROR i notice maggotts crawling in the tub on some waste ive seen this before i know here in houston they can get really bad really fast without diligent cleaning ASAP well when i pick her up i notice they are crawling in her belly button the whole cavity... i actually sqeezed them out like toothpaste (got a visual)
now there certainly comes a time when we all have to make THAT decision to cull or not...

well...

hmmm...

im certain i got them all out...

the animal seems fine at this point it had eaten twice and defecated fine...

SO...

i decided to go ahead and try.
after making sure i had removed ALL the maggots i cleansed the "cavity" with a chlorhexidine wash and packed it with neosporin, kept her on paper towels, she ate and defecated fine took about a full 2-3 months to completely close as time went on she grew and it finally did grow shut albeit a lil crooked she is still small 3-3-1/2 ft. sibs are 4-1/2 to 5ft. so she never did grow quite right and i will certainly NEVER breed her she is our pet.

hope ya enjoyed,,,,,,,,thomas davis

I heard the Hondurans get to be 4-5, sometimes 6 feet...now unless you're a really small person, that little girl of yours looks to be about 9 feet long!

thomas davis Jan 21, 2010 07:52 PM

im 5'10 the male in that pic is over 6ft. and the female is close to 6 ft. ive personally seen a 7ft., it was an old female.
feed them and they will grow.
great snakes.

Very interesting, good work with that snake. I bet it would even breed fine in a year or two, nature has a way of making things work after an injury. Not that you'd want to breed her anyways though, just saying.

hi matt thanks, your right she probably could be bred in a year or so but i just wouldnt want to chance it. where the scales are fused together is real hard, scar tissue i guess??? she will just be a family pet.
btw oh yaaa i used to live in mounds view ehh? anoka to use to love hangin out at minnehaha park, still cold ehhh? i could only stand 2 winters there. they called me a weather wimp at times it was 70below, i did have a laugh and turned the weather wimp thing around come june/july they would be running AC complaining it was 88 degrees hahaha
only snakes i ever found there were garters. cool place just to damm cold do they still have rocky rococco pizza? man that was/is good with some schmidt ehh.

I live in Richfield so not too far off from where you used to live. My wife is actually from Osseo. I think Rocky pizza is still around actually. I've been in TX since May for military duty so I am lucky to be missing the winter. I used to catch a lot of garters as a kid and I did see a bullsnake once that was quite large but it had been DOR in a parking lot at Fort Snelling park right along the minneapolis/st paul border. A real shame.

Very nice story and a lucky little booger you have there. Lucky in the sence that many others would have made her freezer bound if that happened.

I have had those little nasty ****** drive me crazy as well. The hatch time for the flys is somewhere around 3 hours if memory serves me.

First congrats, alot of time and effort went into that! But the big $64K question....if you had to do it all over again, knowing about the time/problems/lack of return on investment.....would you do it all over again?? I can understand it if its sentimental, but I usually dont work like that. I dont get along well with freeloaders.

thomas davis Jan 23, 2010 07:09 PM

yes id do it again, ive culled my share of deformities. this was differant. she's not a freeloader she earns her keep being an ambassodor for her sp. in educational programs and im fairly certain she would be able to reproduce i just wont allow her to.

yeah yeah... grumblegrumble... whatever... im just a guy who LOVES snakes and thought some here could/would apprecieate that story.
i love ALL snakes(pures, hybrids, morphs,ETC.) it is ashame some folks here dont see that. and all because i REFUSE to swallow the bitter pill of taxonomy, and jump inline with traditional thinking, im in someway an enemy. or that i can be intimidated into changing my views.
ironic to say the least.
