softshell dead skin rings

afreet Sep 19, 2003 05:49 PM

I just recently got a small (3" or so) eastern spiny softshell, and for the most part he seems to be doing just fine, but he keeps getting these white rings on his back. They're definately dead skin, not fungus (I have seen pictures of several fungal infections), and if I pick him up and rub them gently the skin in the middle comes right up. They also come and go individually, but there almost always seem to be a bunch of them there. I'm wondering though if these are just some part of his shedding, or if this is an indication of some type of sickness? He's not acting sick at all, he eats everything I give him (reptomin sticks and meal worms) and he loves tearing around the tank chasing the fish. I also have a nice basking spot for him (I never see him on it, but he eats the mealworms I leave on there) and I keep a little aquarium salt in the water. Any idea what's wrong or not wrong? Thanks!

Softshells need slightly acidic water to keep down shell rot. You probably just need to adjust the ph of your water.
