I use big plastic cups full of HOT tap water.....After they thaw out in the water I poor out the now cold water and refill with hot water and take them to the snake room for feeding......I dry them and drop em in their enclosures.....

I only have two snakes, so its relatively easy for me. I put two pinkies on a paper napkin to thaw...shoo the cats away....check on them in an hour. If they are suffucuently thawed (no cold spots in bellies), I put them in a small dixie cup of hot water for about 5 minutes to let them warm up. I then name them "Dinner" and "Supper", and feed appropriately

SDeFriez Jan 22, 2010 10:27 PM

I like that idea John, kinda like instant mice? LOL!

MichelleRogers Jan 22, 2010 08:29 PM

I put them in ziploc's and set them out in the morning and feed them later that day.

I let them thaw out over night and place them while in their bags in warm water to bring up their temps. I dont like to put frozen rodents in hot water because you can easily ruin them. Especially pinks, I've cooked a few that way. Not too bad in smoked fish dip though.

Charlie....Long time man.....

BTW...I don't think the hot water I use is hot enough to ruin any...
I had a buddy that tried to thaw some out in the microwave before...Not only did he ruin all the mice his wife caught him and gave him the microwave.......

My wife caught me using the blender once to make some pinky puree and she gave the blender to me too.....LOL

Well now we know if we want our wife to give us something all we have to do is put some pinks on it.
That could be real bad depending on what it is you want. LOL
I just thaw mine out under a clamp lamp if I need to feed in a hury. Or just room temp (snake room is warm) then give a little extra heat under the clamp lamp right before feeding. It works good.
Microwave can thaw quickly but it too hard to do it right without exploding them. I tried that many years back and the pinks exploded and looked like alian came out of there chest. Never did that again. LOL

I used to thaw everything overnight. Now I just do my larger stuff in the oven (cat/dog proof location) and the mice in the fridge. I do warm them in water just prior to feeding. I have a shoe box and 5 gallon bucket for this purpose.

I also now have "rodent" specific cookie sheets for thawing because my husband got mad when I cooked in the same ones I thawed my rodents.

Honestly I am convinced hot water and soap will safe anything. Seriously does he think I cook on them with the rodent ooze still? :O I sometimes think I tend to fall into the husband category more often than the wife. The snakes are mine, the bucket to thaw in is mine, I have no issue using cooking utensils for feeding... I will admit, my little foster king did give me the giggles this week. He is the thickness of a pencil and informed me he wanted an adult mouse rather than his small stuff. Proceeded to attack the tongs til I put an adult on it and spent an hour working that puppy down. I am pretty sure he burped... Hubby didnt find it as funny as i did.

I got a friend that several years ago decided to warm his rats on the stove he put 4 jumbo rats in a huge pot with water and turned the stove on, fell asleep and didn't wake up till his girlfriend came home screaming about him cooking rats and found boiled rats, which was really nasty, they exploded and the hair had come off.
Needless to say she got new cookware and I got the burms.
I still pick on him till this day about cooking rats.

Pinky puree? is that what the just hatched hatchlings eat? I've always wondered.

Jlassiter Jan 23, 2010 08:49 PM

>>Pinky puree? is that what the just hatched hatchlings eat? I've always wondered.

Pinky puree is only for the stubborn hatchlings that won't take pinkies with all the techniques and tricks to get them to eat....braining, scenting, etc....

I use "pinky puree" in an eyedropper and give them a squirt to get some weight on them....Then I brumate the stubborn feeders.....almost all of them come out of brumation ready to eat pinkies.....

just good ol' plain very warm water. When the water gets cold, repeat as necessary. I tend to take a representative mouse from the thawing bunch and gently push down in the gut area with my index finger and wait to see if anything feels cool/cold. If so, one more soak in very warm water for another couple minutes does it nicely and is thawed just right.

I just lay mine out on paper towels in the snake room for two hours. I dont use hot/warm water since it can begin to cook them and remove more nutrients.

God Bless Evolution.

varanid Jan 23, 2010 10:43 AM

lay out a paper towel on top of the freezer, put 'em on it. Come back in a few hours. My usual method is putting them out while I'm at home on my lunch break (I love a short commute, can come home at eat at home for lunch), and feeding when I get home for the day.

DISCERN Jan 23, 2010 12:24 PM

I thaw out all of my rodents using a small, insulated, plastic drink cooler ( Coleman brand ). The process is very easy:

1. Put desired frozen rodents in.
2. Fill with hot tap water.
3. Wait 15-30 minutes. Check out Kingsnake classifieds and forums during this time.
4. Snakes now have completely thawed-out-and-tasty rodents to dine on.

My two cents.

I let them thaw at room temp for awhile, then I place them in ziplocks, and float them in hot water in a splash sink to get them nice and warm.

RandyWhittington Jan 23, 2010 07:23 PM

I lay them out to thaw if I think about it (if I'm not too lazy) early enough in the day or thaw in warm water. I prefer not to thaw them in water if I can help it only because I hate drying one to two hundred or more rodents at a time.

I don't ever dry them. They eat them wet no problem...Mike Bodner.........By the way there is some funny stuff in this thread. I just showed my wife the photo of all the rats on the stove.

RandyWhittington Jan 23, 2010 08:35 PM

I keep some species on aspen or cypress mulch. If you don't dry them in that case your just looking for trouble.

I lay newspaper over the Aspen when feeding them dry or wet meals.......
