Georgia Update

SgtStinky Jan 23, 2010 06:04 AM

Georgia SB 303 is now in committee. The bottom line is if this thing goes through we will have to pay a licensing fee of $236 once a year (for a collection, not per snake) and microchip any of the listed pythons that obtain a girth of greater than 2 inches.

Anyone have a bad experience with microchips?

If you are from Georgia please contact me.

As with anything that is breaking the skin you do run the risk of infection, but as long as it's done correctly it's a pretty stress free procedure to have done. I'm strongly in favor of microchipping as it allows us to track where an animal goes. One of my biggest problems with what I do personally is wondering how my animals turnout. Although I still might not get all this info it will definitely make tracking were an animal came from and what it exactly is much easier!

Any adverse effects caused by the microchip with regards to thermoregulation or basking and possible hot spots? Does anyone know of a professional journal article or published research paper that covers this topic?

What is the cost?

How common is the practice? And, when did it start?

Thanks, just trying to wrap my brain around all of this.

Microchips are a fairly common practice in the dog and cat world. They have recently gained popularity in the reptile world as a way to establish ownership in higher end animals as well as to monitor legally. Florida has used this as a requirement for several years. I run a rescue in WI and microchip certain animals prior to placement.

Avid is the primary supplier of microchips and they have the nicest packaging and needle system. They run about $10.00 wholesale from the company. Home Again is another supplier and they are working on an exotic specific microchip that will read body temp with in 2 degrees when scanned. Those also run about $10.00 each.

They are injected subcutaneously and are minimally invasive.

Hope this helps!

I've always liked the idea for OUR (keepers and breeders) purposes as it could help with the identification of hets.

Nothing bad experience-wise. I've seen approx 3 percent of the tags stop being readable over the years.
