a peek into the dark, cold zonata closet

JKruse Jan 23, 2010 02:26 PM

well I'm slaphappy to say that I'm shifting half my collection to the brand new Vinotemp wine cooler that is prepped and ready for some handsome z specimens. Temps are 45 - 50F and stable.

I decided to grab the camera for just a couple of quicky shots in the midst of the transfer. The quality of the pics are not the best unfortunately, but time is of the essence when pulling them out into the much warmer air and light of day. My goodness I can't wait for spring!

Black/white (anery) multicincta female and het male

Two black/white (anery) female multicincta that wanted nothing to do with this photographic interlude . . .

Same two females in their box with ceramic 3-level stacks

And a quick shot of a Sierra Juarez agalma yearling with HYPO-E agalma yearling -- nice contrast even though a crappy photo . . .

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm only 1/3 of the way through this brumation cycle and I'm itching already.....been thinking about the incubator recently too.....oh man it's a sickness.....

Very sweet Mr. Kruse!!! On the black and whites----are the females the only ones to go totally black and white? I remember seeing that somewhere, but I am not sure. I know what you mean to be biting at the bit, I am too!! I think I pull my snakes earlier then you do though. (end of Feb.) Worked last year so I shall give it a whirl again!!

JKruse Jan 25, 2010 12:07 PM

Hey Joe, I pull my stuff out beginning of April as I only begin brumating in December. However now that I will utilize the wine cooler, I will begin brumating once they all start to shut down pretty much in September. This will save me months of having them just waste away precious body fat.

The black/white/anery Sierras have typically thrown females, except for a male last year from what I know. And as I anticipate two clutches this year, I'm hoping for a surprise or two. We'll see, and you'll be one of the first to know offline.

Dude, the wine cooler is a blessing. I can fit about 22 adults in there. I will need another next year! I will have to post pics of it...very simple, but nice to see.

And those black/white kings are incredible. The one thicker female was eating all the way up until i had to stop her in prep for the cooling. Trying to keep my expectations reasonable....

Jerry,

Do you have a pic you could share of your wine cooler set up? I have converted one too and would love to see others. Thanks.

JKruse Jan 25, 2010 12:29 PM

Craig, I will be sure to take pics this week of the cooler "in-situ"....LOL.

I also took some MUCH better pics later that day after i'd adjusted my cmaera and changed the lighting. I usually work well under pressure, but those first shots I spewed out I wasnt happy with. So to that end, I will make a "part 2" posting later this week of the cooler and z shots. Thanks much...

Jerry, I really like those black and white cal kings. LOL Just kidding. You are making me think more about getting into some of the mountain kings. The ones you gave are particularly extra nice. You have a good eye and good taste.

JKruse Jan 25, 2010 12:33 PM

Thank you Eric...you always have such nice things to say. Why not try a zonata...they're a challenge (more so than Arizona/Mexico pyros) but get a well-started one from a reputable source and you'll be good to go.
