leo gene question

Ben K Sep 19, 2003 06:52 PM

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering, if you bred a 100% het for blizzard female leo to a super hypo male leo, what would the babies be

All babies would appear normal or perhaps have some reduced spotting. Half would also be het for blizzard. Read bellow if you want some info on genetics.

As I currently undersatnd it the hypo condition is controlled by multiple genes not unlike skin color in people so the babies would fall somewhere between hypo and normal.

The blizzard trait is controlled by a single gene. Each gecko has two copies of every gene (one from mom and one from dad). The normal gene is dominant to the blizzard gene so unless the gecko inhertits a blizzard gene from both its mother and father it will appear normal. That said, your gecko has one normal gene and one blizzard gene. Because it can only contribute one set of genes, there is a 50% chance that the offspring will get the blizzard gene but there is an equal chance that they will get the normal gene.

The Hypo on the other hand is not het for blizzard so can only contribute normal genes. This means that no blizzards will be produced, but half the babies will be blizzard hets. The hets will be indistinguishable from the nonhets.

Hope this helps,
Alice

Crossing leos will be easy for me, since I learned everything about genetics in biology last year.

You still need to understand the characteristics of each trait or morph you are working with and how to apply it before you can adequately predict the results. Some morphs are complex inheritance and traits are recessive.

Just to clarify: This "half" would be a theoretical number. You could breed them for years and not produce one het baby from that pairing. Thems the stakes with genetics.

Thanks for the correction. I meant to put something in there about probability
