heat tape on plastic?

johnthebaptist Jan 24, 2010 12:41 PM

i got these new plastic shelves at wal mart very good price for holding 28qt tubs. I would like to figure out a way to heat them efficiently. is ok to use heat tape on a plastic surface? my assumption is that if its hot enough to melt plastic its hot enough to kill a snake. This is an all colubrid rack and i dont see my temps going past 80-85 TOPS. also going to invest in a helix thermostat. i have a pic (sorry i havent taken the time to learn to post pics here but there is a link) tell me how YOU would go about heating these units.

85 degrees will not melt it. What you will see is that the shelf begins to bow at that point, especially if the cage is heavy.

Nothing to worry about really, but perhaps a better system is to line each shelf with a piece of 1/4" hardboard or pegboard. Put the heat tape on top of that.
