watering hatchlings

dlwise Jan 25, 2010 12:06 PM

For those of you who use sandwich tubs for hatchlings…How do you deal with water. When I only had 1-2 clutches I used the tubs lined with napkins and a soda bottle lid for the water. The only problem was the bottle caps are so easy to spill that they end up making quite a mess. As the number of clutches I am hatching is rising I am spending a lot of time changing out wet “diapers”. Any ideas? I like the tubs with the napkin/paper towel for ease of feeding/cleaning but would welcome suggestions as to how to provide water.

The easy spillage of the bottle caps as water containers is one disadvantage. I just fill them every day and put up with the extra work. However you could try using double sided tape and affix it to the bottom of the cap and then the cap to the bottom of the deli dish. It means carefully folding the paper towel so it doesn't stick in or over the cap.

Could just rip off a corner of the folded paper towel to allow room around the bottle cap...should be the easiest way to do it.

I've been using baby food jars as well as one ounce jam jars. Both work well, but may be too tall for sandwich boxes. I either keep babies in plastic shoeboxes or 32 ounce clear deli containers( 2 inches tall x 6.75 inches in diameter) which can be purchased pre-punched with airholes and are stackable.

I also use the sandwich boxes.
There are little 1 1/2 ounce deli cups you can get.
What I do is glue one in the center of the sandwich box and then drop another one in the glued one. This way it can't turn over and I can remove it to clean it or replace it.

I use aspen even in these sandwich boxes.
Here is a picture of one of the containers with the deli cups.
Pretty bad picture but it gives you an idea.

I know I know, I need to clean the water cup but that's what's so good about it. I can just pop one out, clean it and put it back or simply replace it as needed

Do you feed in different containers? I saw that as the trade off, ease of cleaning vs. ease of feeding. Where do you get your portion cups?

Thanks for the help!

that is the catch. When I was using paper towel I could feed them in the container. With the aspen I have to feed them in a separate deli cup. That is a pain in the but. But, even with the double cup glued in the container they would crawl in and out of the water bowl and I was having to change the paper towels every day anyway. I decided to go with the aspen and go through the hassle of placing each hatchling in a deli cup at feeding time instead of changing paper towels every day.
In the long run it saved a lot of time.
I've always fed just once a week so for me it was worth it.I can't remember the name of the company I get them from, It's where I get my deli cups, shipping boxes, cold packs and heat packs. I will look it up and post it in a little while.

Paper towels drive me crazy! They have to be changed constantly. I went ahead and put my babies on aspen. They have bathroom tissue rolls for hides, and I have found it is real easy to put their food in the rolls. That way they don't ingest too much aspen with their meals. If the baby is out of its hide I just pick them up and point their heads into the hide and they take it from there.

I use the solo small deli cups also in the doubled up method, but rather than using glue, I utilize the double sided tape. It works really well.

Latly, as the other posted said, be sure to place them in the middle, not in a corner. If placed in the corner, the hatchling will hide in the corner and poop and make a mess.

I use the Solo deli cups as well. I use the bathroom size plastic cup inside that is cut as tall as the lidded deli but with a notch on one side for access by the snake. I also use the 1/2" PVC caps which I route a notch straight through the side using a holder that I made by drilling a hole in a scrap of 2 x 6 with a slot from on end. Clamping the slotted end of the wood is an effective clamp for the round cap. No more spills! You can see one in the top tub.

ive seen hot glue used to keep the caps to the container however the only problem that occurs is water change. The other thing i have seen done is bottle caps such as gatorade or even prangle chip tops that have a wider base and wont tip easy how that helps....

.....small hatchlings....we use an 8 oz deli cup with a 1 oz shooter cup with a notch cut out of the side of the top for the snake to get into it...it will fit to the lid of the 8 oz cup....

.......pain to clean and get snake back into it.....by the hundreds........

..............downsizing!!!LOL
