My reply from Senator Jon Tester

daneby Jan 25, 2010 05:58 PM

Dear Dan:

Thank you for contacting me to voice your opposition to S. 373. It's good hearing from you.

As you know, S. 373 would add pythons to the list of injurious species under U.S. Code, Title 18. This legislation would prohibit pythons from being shipped or imported into the United States. Here in the U.S. Senate, I will continue to support legislative policies that protect the rights of Montana pet owners while ensuring the safety of our citizens. Should this legislation come before the full Senate, I will keep your views in mind.

I appreciate your perspective on this important issue. Please don't hesitate to contact me again if I can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Jon Tester
United States Senator

That reply doesn't sound too promising. Like Joel noted, they never seem to have a solid opinion. I think this usually means that they do not agree with your stance on the issue. After all, if they agreed with you, there would be absolutely no reason for them not to tell you so. However, if they don't agree with you, it is "safer" from their political and popularity viewpoint to beat around the bush and be noncommittal in their replies.

Besides for his beating around the bush, the part of his response that tells me he is most likely going to vote for this bill is this:
"...I will continue to support legislative policies that protect the rights of Montana pet owners while ensuring the safety of our citizens."

It seems that whenever someone who doesn't care for reptiles in general and snakes in particular comments on the subject they always fall back on the issue of "safety" (this also tells me that they are generally not very well educated on the subject... I can't and don't blame them, most people aren't, but it would be nice if these same people would be open to a rational discussion and the possibility that they could change their mind or opinion about the subject).

"...I say 'apparently' because despite all our progress she is not at all a tame or handle-able snake and gettting her from that cage would re-start a war.. and we've had a good armistice for several months now."-Gus Rentfro - I love this quote!
