Usually I hate the winter months...

WrathRaptor Jan 25, 2010 11:35 PM

... but I have to love January, because without fail, this is what happens every January at my place:

The male was partially through the process of shedding and then just decided that it was a perfectly good time to hook up with one of my female Blues. And as my new male Blue Beauty, I haven't had him longer than a week. Glad to see that he isn't wasting any time!

That's cool. So these guys are winter breeders? Interesting.

I'm really not entirely sure if they are or not. I know that mine have always bred in January, especially if a really nasty low pressure winter storm front rolls through, it almost always guarantees the onset of mating. However, I know a lot of people have had their Blues breed later in the year during the spring and even into early summer. I have witnessed mating myself during late spring and early summer about a month or so after my females have deposited clutches but have not had them double clutch yet.

Was heading out the door this morning to go visit my mom, and decided just to quick check the Blues before I did. And I found my male locked up with the female that came with him. Haven't even had them 2 weeks, and now he's knocked up both my females!!!
