Quick question for Multi-Herp Breeders

jondubbya Jan 26, 2010 12:20 PM

Is there any other herp/amphibian who's eggs can either:

A: Occupy an incubator at the same time as ball python eggs without detriment.

or

B: Produces eggs at a part of the season where it is VERY unlikely ball python eggs will occupy the incubator.

Thanks.

most colubrid eggs can handle the same temps as ball eggs. time frames will over lap, most of the times.

Leopard gecko eggs can go in a ball python incubator just fine, although you'll produce mostly males in the high 80's.

Hi,

I incubate all of my eggs (which include ball and other pythons, kingsnakes and turtles) in the same incubator. I use a closet with shelving and allow the temps to stratify (no fan). The thermostat (Ranco) probe is on the top shelf for pythons and the closet is set to 88F. The lower shelves stay cooler than 88F (82-85) and the king and turtle eggs cook on those shelves. It is very simpe and ultra reliable. With absolutley minimal modifications, any closet can be converted into a world class, multi-species incubator for a fraction of the cost of those currently on the market. Good luck.

Hi,

Thanks. Actually, I cannot take credit for it. I borrowed the idea from Frank Retes and the Barkers. Dave and Tracy had the original walk in incubator. They use fans to avoid stratification as they use the incubators to cook python eggs and they want the temps fairly uniform. Frank gave me the idea to let the stratification work for you so they many species can be incubated in the same place. I do have a pic and I post it as soon as I locate it. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I use a small, oil heating radiator ($50.00 @ Target) wired to two standard Ranco on/off thermostats. These are wired in sequence for safety (one fail the other will act as a back up.
