Olive Pythons

argus6873 Jan 27, 2010 06:03 PM

Are the Pilbara olives much more expensive or difficult to come by? I know they reach a larger size and have differences in scale count but how does their disposition compare. I have a pair of yearling Aussie's and they are terrors but from what everyone says they calm down significantly with age.

Argus - are you in the US? If you are anywhere outside of Australia, you can forget about owning a L. o. barroni. They are just not available to the hobby.

In Australia, they are considered vulnerable, and my understanding is that they are fairly restricted to private collectors there as well. I do know some breeders have them there, and that the regulations are regional - but I don't know the details.

Like most species olives do have a variance in attitude, most seem to be pretty calm. Mine are extremely gentle - I have heard stories of aggressive babies... but it is all 2nd hand information. Anyway, personalities certainly will vary, but with proper regular handling, they should settle down. I would hope any that don't are in the care of a very experienced keeper. A 12' aggressive olive would certainly be a handful.

I have 3.2, and they are handleable. The big male is 11' and ok. 3 others are 8-10'

Yea, I'm new to olives....worked w GTP's, carpets, ETB's, Madagascar Trees, and common boas but the olives are def a new venture for me. My babies are super aggressive....I have to cover their tanks so as not to stress them out. I've heard that they calm down considerably with age so time will tell. I wouldnt mind having 2.3 or 2.4 eventually. I was curious about the barroni's bc everytime I mention the olives to someone they ask right away if they are aussies or barroni's. My female is huge compared to the male already. The eggs they lay muct be huge. Can't wait.

Jay, do you have aussie or barroni's? I'm about to pick up 1.2 barroni's.

Doug T Feb 06, 2010 12:27 PM

Huh? I don't think even Aussies can keep L.o.barroni legally.

Argus,
My '06 male was a TERROR as a youngster, too. He did a LOT of tail whipping, would spook REALLY easy followed by a lot of biting.

However, at about 8' now, he's one of the most trustworthy in my collection and DEFINITELY my favorite!

Actually they arent as to come by as you'd think. There are a couple of places that have them for sale. NERD has a breeding group and when they hatch eggs they sell the offspring for about $500 each.

I think you have papuans and L.o.barroni confused.

argus6873 Feb 10, 2010 01:57 PM

100% right.....I took a quick look when I was skimming through NERD, they are working with Papuans. My bad.
