History Channel tonight

mfoux Jan 27, 2010 07:02 PM

There are two shows playing on History Channel tonight about large pythons. They'll be playing at 7 and 8 and again around 11pm.

I'm sure that the content will be skewed toward terror.

"I'm sure that the content will be skewed toward terror"

Heck, what other way could it POSSIBLY be portrayed as on TV??

I'll try to check it out, but like most stuff regarding snakes and TV, it will very likely only Pi$$es me off,..... it just never fails really..LOL!

My wife and I just caught the end of the show, and I'm DVR'ing it later tonight. Definitely melodramatic BS. And they creatively edit the footage to slant it toward their point of view. I think it's funny that this is on Monster Quest, the same show where they go out and search for Yeti, Bigfoot, El Chupacabra and the like. Now my blood pressure is up!

OK, watched about the last half or so. Started getting a bit PO'd when they started eluding to the creation of a super bad snake being hybridized by cobras and pythons and other exotics breeding together in the wilds of Florida LOL! At least one of the scientists had the guts to say such a breeding is not possible EVER. The demographic map of potential expansion range of the python species was a bit too far fetched for me. Of course, I am sure none of the folks on the show had the experience of a ball python getting resp problems when kept at low 70s for about a week, or any other tropical snake regurging if kept at less than optimum temps LOL!! Definitely skewed, especially with the Florida coverage. Of course, there was also misidentification of retic skin as being burmese LOL!!

Just like criminals have caused impact on our right to bear arms, stupid hobbyists have caused impact on keeping of these animals. Its a shame this has happened and I do personally feel Fla. has a problem with these animals. I think it will probably stay restricted to the lower portion of the state, but I think the problem still exists and is a problem regardless of how small the range may be.

I think the next time we see some kid with blue hair, Joe Dirt dude, or a wicken chick buying these animals at a show, we should just go up to them and beat the crud out of them LOL!!

varanid Jan 27, 2010 10:41 PM

hmmm...when I was adolescent, I may have been that blue haired pagan and I've never released an animal, or any such crap.

I quit watching History Channel after a really god-awful show they did over Dante's Inferno...they completely left out purgatory, mixed up the 2nd and 3rd circle (I think it was those two...been a while)...all sorts of really incredibly basic errors that any basic editing should have caught.

KevinM Jan 28, 2010 10:49 AM

Hey Varanid, my apologies about stereotyping bad herpers!! I know that completely innocuous looking folks are bad herpers and impulse buyers and more flamboyant folks can be very dedicated and knowledgeable herpers as well. I get a bit upset with any herper or animal keeper that doesnt do research on the animals they are acquiring. No natural history perspective or even general husbandry knowledge. Just impulse buy to satisfy their "cool" needs. My kids get pissed at me for making them buy and read a care book or two on animals they want to get first before purchasing the animal LOL!!

A couple of points the show did elude too was the lack of permits to keep hots vs. hot keepers, and lack of perparation for natural disasters as part of importers management plans.

I feel the problem is prevalent enough that even with assistance from the legit keepers of hots and big constrictors, a viable solution would not be developed to forego a dramatic government decision. Most of these agencies are understaffed and underbudgeted to add work load and costs. Its probably easier to just eliminate the problem totally than try to institute more management and inspection protocols to already week govt. programs.

HA! Sorry I had to reply to this after I read it, because I COMPLETELY agree that there is not enough time spent learning about an animal before acquired, (specifically reptiles)!

I did the same thing with my daughter. I made her (for about a year) read anything and everything I could find regarding care of BP's. Then I quizzed her! Needless to say, she was good to go on her BP for her 7th bday. She also has to clean out the tank herself. I don't let her feed him though, she IS still a kid afterall and I'm not comfortable with her hand being in there when he's lunging at his food lol We use tongs, but still...

KevinM Jan 29, 2010 08:58 AM

Well, kids will be kids. Even with research and earning them, my daughter still gets bored with her pets from time to time and I have to spark her interest to take care of them. Still, I always acquire new pets with the aspect that I like them and want to share my home with them too LOL!! Its kind of a backup system because I know kids are kids and do get bored quickly. Most of the pets my kids acquire are "family" pets for all practical purposes. I wonder how many parents even know their kids are buying these 30-40 dollar baby large constrictors at shows? How many even care their kids are neglecting a living thing? Still kids will be kids. However, with adults its a different story and I cannot tolerate adults who "outgrow" their snakes and neglect them, or dont realize how large they become, behaviours, etc., etc.!!!

DMong Jan 29, 2010 10:50 AM

I totally agree with you Joe, many of the things people(especially adults) are capable of doing disgust me big-time!

No different than the pieces of crap that will sit around and let a dog be tied-up to a tree and be torchured with a grossly embedded collar, etc...!

Some of these "so-called" humans I see on Animal Planet are no different than Hitler or Saddam Hussain, just on a much smaller scale is all. I commend the people that try to help the huge numbers of neglected animals too, because I CERTAINLY could not do it, I would be fired in very short order for going BALLISTIC on some of these scum-bags!

Ah, so nice to hear people that have the same views as I do!

I, too, would never be able to do the Animal Cop thing. I'd get trigger happy REAL quick! So I just do what I can, and adopt my animals.

You are absolutely right, Kevin, that kids will be kids. Thankfully, my daughter has not gotten tired of her BP. lol I also did a lot of research before I picked up my Lola (the Milk).

As far as the people who neglect and abuse animals are concerned, I'd like to see how they'd react if someone treated their mom or kids the same way they treat animals! I'd be willing to bet they wouldn't be too happy!

DMong Jan 30, 2010 09:58 AM

Yeah, I totally agree with ya there!

Exactly Kevin,...all the above you mentioned was an absolute JOKE!.

When I saw the title "Monster Quest", I knew exactly what I was in for..LOL!

The King Cobra x Burmese hybrid has got me REALLY concerned now...HAHAHAHAAA!

When the hell is someone EVER going to do a TV show about how placid and HARMLESS most snakes in the hobby are???............NEVER!,..... because that would take someone that knows what the hell they are talking about to do the show!!

It frustrates the CRAP outa me man!!!

Hey Doug, I've been wanting to do a show like this for some time now. I have alot of advertising industry experience and plenty of connections. The only thing is no matter how much of my own time I donate, there are a lot of production and travel expenses involved. If I had some backing (financial and manpower) I could do a show like that and could spread it like wildfire on the web (rather than pay for tv/cable air time).
