Breeding Question

CoastalPlainHogs Jan 29, 2010 12:23 PM

Hi, my adult female is going through her first shed of the year and appears to be ovulating because of the swollen lower portion of her body.

Introduced her to the male yesterday, she began twitching and making eratic movements. The male did so as well but no breeding.

I was wondering how long I should leave the female in his cage before I should seperate them.

And after she sheds, would that be the best time to introduce?

Thanks

~Brandon

Yes, introduce her to the male after she sheds.

The best way ( in my opinion) is 24 h together, then 2-3 days separately, and again 24 h, and do this couple of times. For me works great.

Yes I did, I was being curious though just seein how they would react. They are apart until she sheds.

There's no harm in leaving a male with a female for too long, or introducing him too often. But if you put them together too briefly, or at the wrong time, you risk missing your window and getting an infertile or low-fertility clutch.

The problem is that "the right time" can vary from female to female, or even year-to-year in the SAME female. I have better luck introducing males several times over a period of several weeks, starting just after brumation, and continuing through the first three shed cycles, or until the female is obviously gravid.
