Misting uro's

bisendow Sep 19, 2003 09:29 PM

Hello! I seemed to have caused some debate over the misting of Uromastyx. In my own personal experience, I have never had any negative effects caused by misting my uros. I have 2 juvenile U.Geyri that I mist 4-5 times a week. This is not taking place in the cage, as to not wet the substrate. 4-5 times a week, they bask for 5-6 hours in direct UNFILTERED sunlight, which during the summer months here in Sacramento CA regularly gets above 100 degrees. When the lizards are first being put out into the sunlight, I mist them. This gives them the opportunity to bask and absorb some of the water. I am aware that they aren't going to be getting rained on in the Sahara desert. If you are able to give your lizards DIRECT UNFILTERED sunlight (not even through a window), then lightly misting them should be safe. The measured temperature of their basking sight in the direct sunlight is 118 degrees. In their enclosure the basking site is 120 degrees.
Do whatever you feel is best for your lizard. If you have never misted your uros and they are the most healthy lizards ever born, then congratulations. But if you can provide them with a hot enough basking sith for 3-4 hours, then try misting them. With my Mali uro, he will actually fall asleep while being misted. He is so hot in the sun that steam comes off his back when we spray him. Good luck with all your lizards, everybody. Really. I figure that if we all have the time and love for our lizards to actually be posting to these forums about everything we have a question about, then we must be doing something right. It's all those people who never even come here, who have never even read a herp publication or a care sheet. Those are the people I worry about. Not you guys.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. As the other person said, I doubt I can do this due to the fact I'm In N.Y. Maybe on Very hot Summer days but..... I don't mist mine, I just leave their greens a little wet. Again, Thanks for the info.

The key here is that you are misting the Uros outside. There is nothing wrong with doing this outside. I would bet they love this. They are opportunistic drinkers. uros are not allergic to water. they just do not like humidity in their cages so if you mist them, definately do it outside. But by no circumstances should you do it in an unventelated cage that will retain humidity.
