Female question

bigbearhook Jan 30, 2010 02:03 PM

I have an adult female corn who has been acting weird lately. She has been refusing food, nose rubbing and constantly cruising her tub. I have had her about a year and have not bred her myself. She is a little swollen in her lower half and looks almost gravid. Is it possible that she is gravid and wants to lay. I read in a book that her actions could be a sign she wants to lay. What do you think. She's in a 42qt tub in my rack and the temps and humidity are right on. She doesn't seem sick, just restless.

I don't see any harm in putting a nestbox in there. Gravid corns usually shed about 10 days prior to laying eggs. Has she shed recently?

Actually she did shed about 10-14 days ago.

Every now and then you will see a female snake that lays without ever having been with a male. Happened to me. Also she may have been with a male before you got her and retained sperm.

If she lays and the eggs look good check them for fertility by "candling" them with a bright flashlight in a dark room. If you see blood vessils they are live. If not they are duds and should be discarded. The embryos can be hard to see when they are first layed so wait 2-4 days and then it is very easy to tell. Naturally keep the eggs at the right temp and humidity untill you know for sure, just in case.
