Who is happy with herping?

snakeadventures Jan 30, 2010 03:41 PM

When I was a boy, I was introduced to snakes, toads, gators, lizards, and other nature by my grandfather. Ever since then, herping (that wasn't a word by then) has been such a source of joy and entertainment for me that it is hard to describe. I was just wondering if anyone else enjoys herping for what it is. If it was enjoyable at one point and not now, what has changed and why? Also, is it possible to have rational & useful conversations about a common interest/hobby on this forum without anyone getting wounded? and if not, why not? Just some thoughts and questions....

it's a blast Check out the field forum on here if you want.
As for me, I'm just waiting for it to warm up...we got 11-12" of snow Thursday and Friday with lows in the teens, so it'll be a bit for us I guess 8sigh*

The only problem I have iwth field herping is getting frustrated when I dont' find much.

A day in the field is always good. In my mind, herping includes reptile husbandry and everything else related to reptiles. Maybe the business part of herping has spoiled any chance for happiness for some.

I get out whenever I can, it is what sustains me, my main hobby. It is where I go to get away from everything. Good day or bad, IT'S ABOUT THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE,not just about the herps, for me.

"It is where I go to get away from everything"

Yes, there really isn't anything contentious when you're out in nature unless you run into an angry badger or bear. Nice finds.

Great pics Todd!. Yeah, sort of like the phrase..."a bad day fishin' beats a good day at the office",.....same goes for herping!..LOL!

Can't wait to get down into the southern "sticks" of Homestead in Miami/Dade sometime soon with Tom Crutchfield and locate some sweet serpents!

I dunno...I manged to half fall into prickly pear one time. I think I'd rather have been at the office at that point!! freaking HURT getting all those spines out...then the little spines that you can't see for crap and that you gotta hunt for with a glass and tweezers...uuuugh.
that bullsnake was NOT worth it, I have to admit

duct tape! Try dog or jumping cholla, or just some nasty bull nettles, fire ants, ticks aren't too bad an issue, how's about some good ol' chiggers! Still beats the office!

I'll see your nettle and raise you canadian thistle--that stuff gets HUGE and damnit it hurts. Most of those I can deal with but DAMN the prickly pear all in my calf and thigh just hurt like hell. Thank god the little needles didn't get through the pants *shudder*
