Source for scenting?

BrianS. Jan 30, 2010 07:53 PM

This will be the first year that my Gray-bands will be of breeding size and weight. I live in an area that I can't collect lizards for scenting, in case of picky feeders. I refuse to believe that I won't have at least a few issues, so I want to be prepared. Can anyone suggest a source for lizards I can use? I've ordered TONS of feeder insects and frozen mice over the years, but I've never noticed anyone with lizards. EXCEPT, some really horrible, awful looking anoles which almost have to be just wild collected and shipped in volume.

Thank you,
Brian

I would suggest that along with everything else you try find some med geckos... they are nationwide and non-native... and they work well to start most babies. You can buy them cheap when you can find them, or you can go on the hunt. I heard they are super easy to collect with long tweezers or forceps, they just sit there and let you pick them off (if you reach up with your hand they of course run).

Now it would not hurt to get some more native stock for scenting, but that is much harder unless you get to an area to collect them yourself.

Know anyone that has any now?

I've still never found or been told of anywhere to get anything other than anoles. LLLreptile sells them, but they are $45 for 10. I ordered them last year to try it out, and they were the most awful, malnourished, pitiful lizards ever. Also, they very small, so you're not going to get far with a $50 purchase of 10. I'm really hoping to find either a better source, or a different type of feeder lizard. I don't have any options to collect in the wild here.

We have plenty of meds where I am, in summer time of course - I just have to get off my lazy butt or engage some entrepreneurial kids who wanna make some movie money.
