still confused about housing 2 pyros

yankeeslover Jan 30, 2010 09:51 PM

I know I asked the question yesterday on if its possible on housing two young pyros toghether, and i got alot of great answers on others who bred them together, or have brumated them together, but what about coexisting in one tank right from young? I am getting a 2008 female and a 2009 male, and so far im gonna house in seperate housing, but I have been advised that I might be better off just housing them all in one 10 gallon tank. I am afraid of doing this because of the obvious reason of canabilism. but i also heard that pyros dont eat snakes like other? thanks, Pete

It can happen, it probably won't if you keep them fed and they are of equal size. I'd go with a 20 with plenty of hides on each side. That way, they can separate if they want to. I would say yes, but if you have fear about your ability to supply a proper heat gradient and plenty of warm and moist hides, I wouldn't do it. Like I said before, keep 1 and raise it successfully, then get more. Once you feel like you know them, then you can try advanced keeping. But I am sort of an experimenter of sorts, I am not afraid of losing a king to another. it is best, I think if you do it young, and check them. But again, if you lose a snake then it would be on your head. It's your money, go with what you think and feel is right. But I thought you said you weren't going to anyway because you weren't going to breed them, and they are from two different localities. This would get you pyros, but ruin your locality snakes, worth more money for locale specific.
You will probably find that they will share space most of the time but they would need to have the option to separate if they want to, can't stress this point enough.

hehe..i had my pyro all picked out.. was only gonna get one..but then I found a 2008 female that I also fell in love with. I spent three days going back and forth on which one i should get. so I decided that If i got one, i would regret not getting the other, so i said to myself 'what the heck, I will get both" this way i wont live down my decision to leave the other one out.. as far as housing, I already have a 10 gallon that I had from walmart last year that i never used, so im just gonna find a screentop probably at petsmart and get some clips, and I will just buy another 10 gallon tank from walmart($13.00) and put the other one in this one..I figure the 10 gallons should last me awhile as the Pyros dont seem to get as big as other kings. But your right, I dont feel right or comfortable keeping together so im not gonna even look at doing that...,and I also have no plans of breeding in the future.....thanks, Pete

hahaha, you're hooked, won't be long till you start seeing all the awesome babies we post then you'll catch the bug, then you'll have to get another pair so you can match up the ones you have, pretty soon you'll be trading species for the next big thing, for God's sake man, don't look in the mexicana subforum at the top of the page!!! Or don't look at Green Tree Pythons!!!

You'll be safe to get two that are relatively the same size. Mine crawl all over each other and I've stopped worrying. Just feed them in separate containers, so they don't have an accident. Watch them for a while when you first put them together. Watch for any aggression, just in case. I also house a lot of corns together and milk snakes as well. No problems. The thing you'll worry about the most with pyros is escape. Make sure your caging is escape-proof. Get 2 that are already feeding on f/t. Post some pics when you get them.

I say DON'T....The more experienced hobbyist can, but since you are asking such newbie questions...Don't even try it....Just my two cents.....
