What gender is my snake?

enzirufishu Jan 31, 2010 03:00 PM

I picked up this snake on craigslist and was told it was female, but due to it's small size (500g) and according to him almost 3 years old, I thought I'd check. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with snake parts. Sorry for the fuzzy photo, Hard to position a squirming snake at just the right spot for a timed camera.

from what i can see it does look female the 2 little poited things you see there are sent glands but if youre not very experencied in popping them i would suggest letting someone else do it or have them probed by youre vet or an experencied breeder. so not to damadge them. regards

Thank you for the prompt reply, I was concerned. Hopefully I'll get some hands on experience on sexing snakes from someone who knows what they're doing in the future

Coincidentally...I just popped an 18 month old ball that I have and he looked to be a male...compared to the picture that is posted earlier in this thread. His bits extended out further than that in the picture, so I am gonna say he is a male. I am confident in that. He is a neat little guy. I do have a question though. Is it normal for a ball to have four white scales in the middle of a patch of brown? Also he is the first snake I have tried to pop and it was with gentle pressure so there was no injury to him.

I'd say female. Those scent glands have fooled me before...

Once you've popped 20-30 babies, you get the hang of it.

Let's hope I someday get around to popping 20-30 babies! (And their all mine....) *fingers crossed*

Looks to be a female. Check out our FAQ on sexing/popping at our site, there are some more pics and details on the often subtle differences between males and females at the neonate size.
