NC Herp Regulations?

viborero Jan 31, 2010 07:51 PM

Hey all. I will be moving to Aberdeen, NC in Moore County at the end of March. Could someone please direct me to a list of restricted wildlife for the state and or county?

I don't plan on bringing anything dangerous, just some Mex Black Kings, Cal Kings, Knobs, Brooks, Corns, triaspis, Black Rats, Western Hogs, and Sonoran Gophers andI want to make sure that I don't tread on any local regs.

Also, can anyone tell me about herping permits? Do I need a hunting or fishing license?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance for any and all info!

As far as I'm aware the only critters that are typically in the hobbie and restricted in NC are:

southern hognose
northern pine
OBX king

Outside of that to keep more than a particular number native speceis you need a permit. Heres a link to the application.

Thanks Tony. I had seen that permit. Is there one needed for herping/collecting?

If you have any further questions try contacting Jeff Hall (jeff.hall@wildlife.org), he is NCWRC's head herp guy. The state herp society is a great resource as well particularly if you are interested in the conservation/research side of herpetology (http://www.ncherps.org/). Lastly if you are ever in Raleigh stop on by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, we have some neat stuff on exhibit and it is FREE!! (I may be biased as I am the Living Collections Herpetologist ).

Hope some of this helps,
Phil Bradley

Nice gig Phil. We should hook up if you ever get over my way. I'm in Currituck County.

Thank you, Phil. I was already looking into the NC Herp Society, and it will help to have a contact name and email. I have been pretty involved with the AZ Herpetological Association for the past few years and look forward to working with a new group of folks and herps.

Thanks again and I will definitely look you up this spring!
