How long will they be ok with temps in low 70's? (power outage,more...)

Sara2 Sep 19, 2003 10:11 PM

My power is still out from the hurricane last night and may not be on for awile(posibility of 7 days, but some around seems to be coming back). I am visiting a friend who has power. The temps are all around 72 degrees in the cages right now but could go lower overnight, and the youngest ones I have right now are about a month old. Think they should be ok for awile? I'll only be here fo another hour or so, so any opinions soon would be great. Thanks

I've heard people putting hot water into bottles and then placing the bottles in the corners of the cages to help warm up them up. Then they replace the bottles with more warm water as they cool off.

I guess that doesn't really answer your question, but I think it's important to do the extra effort especially for your younger leos.

It's all electric in my house. So basicly no way to get hot water at this point. Heck our water just came back on a few hours ago. It would be a good idea though, I wish we had a gas heater/stove. Damn.........I don't know what I should do. They all look ok, but I don't like them being cold.

You can get those heat pack hand warmer things at Walmart or sporting good stores etc. They'll work for warmth for your leos over the short run. They don't get hot enough to burn, just hot enough to warm. Good luck!

Thankyou for posting that question..... i was wondering the same thing, although what storm we got up here (Canada) wasn't big and i still have power, i've always wondered what i was going to do if the power went off for a long time. Luckily the main source of heat in the winter here is our large wood stove (it gets up to 90 degrees sometimes). So we can cook on it and my only thought had been to move the geckos to the warmer part of the house.....but those hand warmer things are a great idea. I think i'll stock up on some.

If you have tremper albinos, their colors may permanently darken. I would worry about the small ones, but what can you do? If you can take them to your friend's house with power, I would, otherwise hope for the best- really they will probably be fine, though it is probably best not to feed them as they probably won't be able to digest at that temp. Leos are pretty hardy animals. I had a subadult/older juvvy gecko lost in my house in winter for 5 months and it was fine, didn't even lose that much weight!
