Eating Issues....

thomasm06 Feb 01, 2010 01:04 PM

So my female has not eaten since mid October and I think I am stressing out more than she is. She is six months old and had been eating on and off since I got her. She just finished a shedding cycle and I was hoping after she shed she would get her appetite back but alas it was not so. Took her to my local exotic pet store for them to give me opinions and they looked at her and didn't see that she was in bad shape. That made me feel better about her.

I guess I am just looking for moral support and any experiences or any advice from y'all that will give me hope that she will start eating again.

Has there been a drop in temps. Snakes stop eating and become less active in the winter, and sometimes it doesnt take a huge drop in temps to cause this effect. I had a hog last year that stopped eating during the winter, and it turned out the cage temp had lowered a little because of the room being cooler. I just got the temps back to normal and she ate great again. loosing a little wait wont kill her, but try to make sure she isnt loosing to much muscle mass. thats when you need to worry.

Yeah, its been winter and I was expecting her to stop eating but not for this long. I keep both of my snakes on automated systems which keep a range from 79 to 90 in their tanks cold to hot sides respectively. That is a constant temp regulated by both light and under the tank heat pad on a thermostat. Most of their day heat is provided by the lamps and the night temp is from the UTH. I spot check using a laser thermometer throughout the day just to be safe. I keep it so they have a good movement range for thermal regulation. I will post pictures of their set ups when possible.

As far as weight goes. She still looks like she did before she stopped eating. I don't really know what to look for when looking for weight loss. She still can flip her self over really fast if I try and turn her over she still hisses and strikes at me when she feels uncomfortable. She seems like she is in good shape. She makes laps around her cage and constantly flicks her tongue at me. She currently is sitting on the warm side coiled up looking at her future mate.

Nice hoggies ! Male have very contrast colours. From the pic, female looks all right. Don`t worry, hognoses likes to stress out their owners, but sooner or later they are must eat something, because hognose are always hungry ! If tuna don`t help try to scented pinky with chickien. I see that You have terrariums, so when You try to feed them, make sure that they don`t see You. Sometimes hognose don`t want to eat when someone is looking.

She looks pretty healthy to me. I have always hated the idea of going back to scenting once an animal has started taking unscented mice, but I suppose it is better than the possible alternative.
By the way, that is a screamer of a red male!! Nice!
