Kansas Senator response...good one.

Joel_Thomas Feb 02, 2010 10:31 AM

Dear Mr. Thomas:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on the proposed ban on pythons and exotic snakes. I always appreciate hearing from my fellow Kansans.

As you may know, Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) has introduced S. 373, which would amend the federal criminal code to add the constrictor snake of the species Python genera to the list of injurious species that are prohibited from being shipped or imported into the United States. The bill has been reported out of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and awaits further action on the Senate floor.

As the father of five, I understand the concerns of parents in keeping our children safe. However, we should not impose unnecessary, burdensome regulations that threaten the individual rights and freedoms of our citizens. Additionally, I believe in limiting the role of the federal government and its interference in the matters of the states. This is an issue better addressed at the local level, and would set a dangerous precedent of federal government control of people’s pets.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Rest assured, I will keep your comments in mind should this bill come before the Senate. Please visit my website, http://brownback.sentate.gov , for more information on the issues on which I am working.

Sincerely,

Sam Brownback
United States Senator

Yeah, whoever replied actually read the e-mail and understood
our point of view.

That's the first response I see posted here that actually seems
sincere and isn't just a formatted, vague, standard reply.

This surprises me coming from the conservative kansas bible belt.snakes equal weirdos and satan right?I wonder what my response will be from him.

Randall_Turner Feb 02, 2010 02:51 PM

You aren't familiar with Kansas then, other then a few extremist morons you find little bible bangers around here. Thankfully the Reps we have had are most often willing to listen and use common sense, unlike too many places anymore.

I just remember growing up and hearing how your weird if you play with snakes instead of puppies......As far as bible belt, well it seems like we have a church on just about every residential block around here. Jahovahs witnesses like to visit my place about 2 times a month. Guess i'm just nice to talk to.
My parents feared snakes my grand parents feared snakes.I'm the odd ball.

Randall_Turner Feb 02, 2010 05:26 PM

I hear ya, there are plenty of churches around here but few pushy ones, there is a jehovahs witness that comes by every couple months, he thankfully is a nice guy. I though had a granny that would go out and catch lizards etc with me when I was younger, so the reptile love wasn't looked at as odd.

Wow, good to see someone still believes in the idea of self governing states. That's important beyond this issue alone. Was the way this country was supposed to be run from the beginning.

Treeserpent Feb 02, 2010 04:11 PM

Yes you really hit the nail on the head. Self governed states......This is HOW it was supposed to be. This brownback has interested me.I love this sentence the best:I believe in limiting the role of the federal government and its interference in the matters of the states. You have my vote SAM!
